San Diego Makes Two Trade Deadline Deals

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls acquired right-winger Scott Kirton from the Trenton Titans Tuesday in exchange for Dean Tiltgen. The Gulls also acquired the rights to forward Nick Lent from the Greenville Grrrowl for future considerations.

Kirton, 32, joins the Gulls after splitting time this season with Trenton and Greenville. He began the year with the Grrrowl before being traded to the Titans on Feb. 27. In 59 combined games with both clubs, the 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound native of Penetanguishene, Ontario registered 37 points (18g, 19a) and 87 penalty minutes.

This is the veteran right-winger's ninth professional season and seventh in the ECHL. In 512 career games, Kirton has accumulated 428 points (168g, 260a) and 1,042 penalty minutes. His best season came with Greenville in 1999-00 when Kirton established career highs with 25 goals, 50 assists and 75 points. He was a seventh round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

Lent, 26, comes to the Gulls after splitting time this season with the Reading Royals and American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons. In 44 games with Springfield, the 6-foot-5-inch, 225-pounder from Westwood Mass. notched 17 points (7g, 10a) and 51 penalty minutes. On Feb. 5, Lent was traded to Greenville then was immediately sent up to Springfield, where he has played 17 games, accumulating six points (1g, 5a) and 23 penalty minutes.

This is Lent's fifth professional season and third in the ECHL. In 223 career games, he's recorded 110 points (55g, 55a) and 300 penalty minutes. Lent's best season came with the now-defunct Richmond Renegades in 2002-03 when he established career highs with 24 goals, 18 assists and 42 penalty minutes. Lent was an eighth round selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1996 NHL entry draft.

"I feel very good about both of these deals," Gulls head coach and general manager Steve Martinson said. "In acquiring both Scott and Nick, we added more scoring, size and experience to our roster, which will certainly help us during the playoffs."

Tiltgen, 30, played 31 games for San Diego this season, notching 10 points (2g, 8a) and 20 penalty minutes. He came to the Gulls last season and posted 67 points, tied for 10th most in the West Coast Hockey League. Tiltgen also ranked second on the team with 38 assists and was a key contributor to San Diego's Taylor Cup Championship run.

San Diego made a minor transaction Monday, re-sending defenseman Andy Reierson back to the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. In six games with the Blue and Orange this season, Reierson posted three assists and two penalty minutes.
