SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings will feature the Memphis Chapter of the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) during its January 2nd home game against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.

This branch is one of 400 DBSA nationwide chapters, which foster almost 1,000 support groups across the United Sates.

Chris Dowdy, Media Relations Director for the Memphis Chapter, believes the people who organize DBSA meetings are what make this group unique and successful, because they have firsthand experience with depression and bipolar disorder.

"We are people who walk in your shoes on a day-to-day basis," he said.

At meetings Dowdy said the group hopes to impart a "sense of comfort or family" to any and everyone who attends.

Locally, the Memphis chapter has three meeting locations, Lauderdale Community Hospital, First Congregational Church, and Lakeside Behavioral Health System. Dowdy said the chapter would like to start a meeting group in DeSoto County.

DBSA is not just for those living with depression and bipolar disorder, but for their family and friends too. People in group members ‚¬â„¢ lives are welcome to attend meetings, to learn more about these conditions and how they can help their loved ones.

Dowdy believes that for the DBSA "educating people is the key" to eliminating stereotypes about mental illnesses, and to help transform the lives of people who have them.

On December 17th, the Memphis chapter held its first auction, raising $1,000. The group uses its funds to provide resources to its members to help find doctors, and to aid them in affording their medications.

According to DBSA, more than 23 million adult Americans suffer from some form of depression each year, while bipolar disorder affects about 2.3 million U.S. adults. The DBSA started in 1985 to ensure people living with these diseases are treated fairly, and have somewhere to turn for support.

The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of the Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss.
