
P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 6-2

Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 6-2 Friday evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Pascal Pelletier, Mark Stuart, and two goals a piece from Petr Kalus and Ben Walter. Providence is now on a nine game point streak and has 52 points with a 24-18-1-3 record, only three points out of second place in the Atlantic Division.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at the 5:00 mark of the opening period. From behind the Pirates net Ben Walter sent a pass in front of the crease to Kalus. He snuck the puck past Portland net minder Mike Wall, with T.J. Trevelyan earning the second assist. Providence extended their lead to 2-0 at the 16:03 mark. Once again it was Kalus on the goal with Walter setting up the play. Dwayne Zinger had the second assist. The P-Bruins went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
In the second period, the P-Bruins extended their lead to 3-0 at the 12:56 mark. Trevelyan and Pelletier had a 2 on 1 opportunity and Trevelyan passed the puck to Pelletier skating down the right wing. Wall made a move in net for the Pirates and Pelletier was able to sneak the puck in between the post and Wall's skate. Mark Stuart recorded the second assist. The Pirates got on the board at the 16:09 mark. Geoff Peters tallied his first goal of the season with Brian Salcido picking up the lone assist. Providence went into the second intermission leading the Pirates 3-1.
In the third period the P-Bruins went on only their second power play of the game and took advantage of it. At the 6:56 mark, Stuart fired the puck under the crossbar and into the net with David Krejci grabbing the lone assist to extend his point scoring streak to nine games. Portland once again cut the lead to two at the 9:55 mark. Matt Keith scored a breakaway goal with Clay Wilson and Ryan Carter earning the assists. Providence wrapped up the scoring with two goals from Walter. His first came at the 14:54 mark with Kris Versteeg and Jeremy Reich tallying the assists. His second goal was at the 15:23 mark with Martins Karsums and Dennis Packard earning the assists. The P-Bruins went on to the 6-2 victory.
Philippe Sauve stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced for the P-Bruins, while Wall made 17 saves for the Pirates. Providence was 1 for 2 on the power play, while Portland went 0 for 1 on the man-advantage.
The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday, February 2 at 7:05 p.m. for The Rhode Island Lottery Hat Night versus Portland Pirates. The P-Bruins are also home that weekend on Sunday, February 4 for a 2:05 p.m. start versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
