January 26, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
The Admirals and BEARS duked it out for nearly 65 minutes, with Norfolk ending a thrilling game with an overtime game-winner. The BEARS trail the Admirals by two points with a game in hand after a 5-4 overtime loss Friday at Norfolk Scope.
Norfolk opened up the scoring early when Danny Richmond scored his eighth goal of the season just 1:25 into the game. The BEARS would tie the game when Kyle Wilson scored his 11th goal of the season and third against Norfolk. The goal came from Louis Robitaille and Matt Hendricks at 6:23. The Admirals would come back with a goal with Jonas Nordqvist from Craig MacDonald at 12:36 to take a 2-1 lead. Late in the period, HERSHEY would head back onto the power play for the fourth time, and cashed in with a game-tying marker. Dave Steckel scored off a rebound of a Trevor Byrne shot for his 17th goal of the season. The goal at 19:12 tied the game at 2-2 after one period. HERSHEY fired 18 shots on goaltender Corey Crawford, while Daren Machesney saw just six in the first 20 minutes.
Into the second period, the Admirals picked up two goals to take a 4-2 lead. Nolan Schaefer came on in relief of Machesney to begin the period, and didn't fare much better early. Pierre Parenteau led a two-on-one into the BEARS zone and rifled a shot past Schaefer at 3:28 to give the Admirals a 3-2 lead. Norfolk got a break to score the club's fourth goal of the night. Colin Fraser tried to center the puck for a back door opportunity, but Trevor Byrne inadvertently kicked it past Schaefer into the goal for Fraser's seventh of the season. The goal at 8:41 gave the Admirals a 4-2 advantage, a lead they would take into the third period. Both teams fired eight shots on goal in the middle 20 minutes.
HERSHEY rallied from two goals down to force overtime despite the hostile Norfolk environment at Scope. Steckel scored his second of the game and 18th of the season at 3:58 of the third to cut the Norfolk lead to 4-3. Tomas Fleischmann tied the game with his 17th of the season at 12:32. The goal was unassisted after an Admirals turnover. After a thrilling end to regulation and through overtime with both teams enjoying scoring chances, Norfolk won the game at 4:41 of sudden death. Craig MacDonald took advantage of a HERSHEY turnover and went short-side against Schaefer to win the game.
Notes: Jamie Hunt missed Friday's game with an upper body injury. The game drew 8,884 fans to Norfolk Scope, the largest crowd at an Admirals home game since they joined the American Hockey League in 2000. It's also the first sellout the Admirals have had since joining the AHL. The two teams will meet Saturday night at GIANT Center, and then not until Saturday, April 7 along HERSHEYPARK Drive. Bruce Boudreau said on the BEARS Radio Network pre-game show that Schaefer would make his first HERSHEY start Saturday night at GIANT Center against Norfolk.
