Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Friday recalled forwards Matt Ellis and Matt Hussey from the Grand Rapids Griffins, who in turn recalled center Evan McGrath from the ECHL's Toledo Storm and signed goaltender Ryan Cyr and right wing Jamie Tardif to professional tryouts.
Ellis and Hussey are both expected to play for the Red Wings tonight in St. Louis, replacing flu-stricken Kris Draper and Robert Lang. Including Josh Langfeld's call-up to Detroit on Thursday, three of the Griffins' top four scorers are now with the Red Wings.
Ellis, the Griffins' 25-year-old captain, ranks second on the team with 14 goals, third with 31 points and five power play goals, and first with four shorthanded goals. He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings on Dec. 18 and logged four games with the parent club, averaging 4:59 in ice time with three shots, one hit and a minus-one rating.
Hussey, 27, is slated to make his Detroit debut tonight and become the 84th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL. Fourth on Grand Rapids with 25 points (9-16-25), he'll look to add to his career NHL totals of 16 games played and four points (2-2-4) with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2003-06.
McGrath, 21, has appeared in 33 games with the Griffins this season, totaling six points (3-3-6). During his three-game stint with Toledo, he recorded four points (1-3-4), a plus-four rating and two penalty minutes.
Cyr, 22, begins his second tour of duty with Grand Rapids, after serving as Jimmy Howard's backup during a 3-1 loss to Peoria on Nov. 17. He has appeared in 12 games for the UHL's Muskegon Fury, posting a 9-2-1 record with a 3.09 goals against average and a 0.900 save percentage.
Tardif, 22, joins his third AHL club this season, after going scoreless in three previous games with Manitoba and Iowa. A rookie pro who participated in the Griffins' 2006 training camp and scored a goal in the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game, he has appeared in 33 games for the Storm, ranking among their leaders with 10 goals (T3rd), 19 assists (1st) and 29 points (2nd).
