Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Regina, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings (11-3-2-1) scored early and often on Friday night as they knocked off the Regina Pats (6-9-0-0) 6-3 at the Brandt Centre in the Queen City.
The Pats were able to open the scoring midway through the first period as rookie Zane Rowan was able to put home the first goal of his career having his backdoor pass deflect in off an Edmonton defender.
The Oil Kings didn't waste any time evening the score as just 1:19 later, Dylan Guenther tucked home his team-leading ninth goal of the season after he grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, burned past the Regina defence and slipped a backhand through the legs of Drew Sim.
Jacob Boucher gave Edmonton their first lead of the game with 4:01 left in the frame after he was left unaccounted for following an Oil Kings penalty kill at the Regina blueline where Guenther found him with a homerun pass and Boucher made no mistake elevating the puck over the glove of Sim, sending Edmonton to the intermission with the 2-1 lead.
In the second period the Oil Kings put their foot down scoring three times, in three different ways, to stretch their lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes.
8:46 into the period, Logan Dowhaniuk wristed home a point shot for his second goal of the season on an Edmonton power play to open the flood gates. Jake Neighbours picked up his first point of the season with the primary assist on the goal.
Josh Williams added a shorthanded goal at the 15:16 mark after Jakub Demek outmuscled a Regina defender along the end boards and spotted a wide-open Williams, who one-timed in his eighth goal of the campaign.
Just 3:20 later, Jalen Luypen made it 5-1 after finishing on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play with Carson Latimer with a bullet shot from the right-circle for his sixth tally of the year.
In the third period, Connor Bedard would do what he could to try and galvanize a Pats comeback by scoring a pair of beautiful goals early in the last stanza, but that would be the only offence his team would find.
Boucher tacked on his second of the night in between the Bedard markers to give Edmonton the 6-3 victory.
Sebastian Cossa made 26 saves for the Oil Kings, while Sim finished the night with 28 saves in the Pats crease. The Oil Kings went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Pats were 0-for-3.
Next up, the Oil Kings finish their four-game Saskatchewan trek with a stop in Moose Jaw to battle the Warriors tomorrow night at 6:00 P.M. You can catch all the action at oilkings.ca/radio.
