Swift Current Broncos News Release

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (5-7-2-1) scored four unanswered goals in the second period Friday night, leading them to a 5-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen (5-7-0-0).

Swift Current opened the scoring off a nice give-and-go passing play between Brady Birnie and Cole Nagy. Birnie took the return feed in the slot and pulled the puck to his backhand, beating Brayden Peters with his second goal of the season 7:48 into the game.

The lead didn't last long however, as Oliver Tulk capitalized on a failed clear by Swift Current. Taking a pass from the corner, Tulk cut across the crease and slid the puck past Isaac Poulter just 49 seconds after the Brocnos opened the scoring.

The game remained 1-1 through 20 minutes with the Hitmen outshooting Swift Current 12-4.

The Broncos took the lead back 8:26 into the second period and didn't look back. Caleb Wyrostok took a pass off his skate in full stride on right wing, then dropped it off for Sam McGinley who beat Peters under the blocker for his first goal of the season.

The floodgates seemed to open after the goal with Owen Pickering adding to the Broncos lead shortly after.

While on the power play, Josh Filmon popped the puck over to Mathew Ward in the slot and Ward spotted Pickering alone at the back post, feeding him the puck for an open-net goal just seven seconds into the power play.

While 4-on-4 in the later stages of the period, Ward had the puck in the high slot of the Calgary zone and worked it to the front of the net for Filmon who beat Peters over the glove from in tight to push the Broncos lead to 4-1. It was Filmon's third straight game with a goal.

After killing off a penalty kill in the final minute of the period, Rylan Gould jumped out of the penalty box and chased down a loose puck in the Hitmen's zone, beating Peters on the blocker side for his third goal of the year with just five seconds to play in the second period.

Ethan Buenaventura took over in net for the Hitmen in the third period as Peters was pulled after five goals on 12 shots.

Poulter shut the door on the Hitmen after their tying goal in the first, turning aside 35 of 36 shots over the course of the game as the Broncos won their third straight with the 5-1 victory.

Swift Current now looks ahead to Saturday night as they welcome the Prince Albert Raiders (5-9-0-1) for the first meeting of the season.

Announced attendance was 1,326.
