Maier Sensational in 100th Career Win
November 13, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
BRANDON, MB - Nolan Maier has joined the triple-digit club.
The veteran goaltender for the Saskatoon Blades notched his 100th career win, making a renowned 46 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings at Westoba Place on Friday.
The pride of Yorkton, SK was nearly unbeatable, stopping numerous point-blank opportunities in the second and third periods to earn his ninth win of the season. Of his 46 saves, 35 came in the final 40 minutes of play.
Tristen Robins netted his 10th goal of the season, and added an assist to push his campaign total to a league-leading 27 points. The marker came in the third period to give the Blades a 2-0 lead. Captain Aidan De La Gorgendiere also scored for Saskatoon, who improve to 11-4-1-0 on the season.
The victory opens a challenging stretch of three games in three nights for the Blades, with back-to-back contests against the league's hottest team, the Winnipeg ICE, coming up.
The Blades captain netted his first goal of the campaign just over 15 minutes into the first period. Alternate captain Kyle Crnkovic set De La Gorgendiere up for a snap-shot from the high slot, which deflected off a body in front and past Kruger, giving the Blue & Gold a 1-0 lead.
The biggest highlight of the second period came in Nolan Maier's crease. The veteran 'tender stone-walled Nate Danielson on a cross-ice one-timer, slamming his right pad down in time to keep the Wheaties off the board.
While Maier stood his ground on one end of the ice, Robins added some breathing room at the other end. The San Jose Sharks second rounder was fed a goal-line pass from Crnkovic to the left dot, and in no time he released his 10th of the campaign.
Wheaties captain Ridly Greig scored the lone goal for Brandon, ending Maier's bid for a shutout late in the third period. Despite pulling Kruger with just over a minute to play, Brandon couldn't muster any sustained pressure late.
It's the Blades second win over the Wheat Kings this season, and the fifth point of a possible six.
Maier and the rest of the Blade City Bunch will try for a third straight victory on Saturday night, as they take on the Winnipeg ICE from Wayne Fleming Arena at 7:00pm CT.
