Oil Kings Double up Pats 6-3

November 13, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats lost 6-3 to the Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night at the Brandt Centre.

The Pats are now 6-9-0 on the season, while the Oil Kings improve to 11-3-3 and remain tied for first place in the Central Division.

The Regiment got a pair of standout goals from Connor Bedard, plus the first career goal for Zane Rowan, but their lacklustre second period proved to be the difference. The middle frame is when Edmonton's lead went from 2-1 to 5-1. The visitors were led by Jacob Boucher, Jakub Demek and Dylan Guenther up front, who each recorded multi-point games. Five different Oil Kings scored in the win.

The Pats host the Lethbridge Hurricanes next on the schedule tomorrow night.

THE GOALS

1st Period

REG 1-0 at 9:38 - Zane Rowan (1), assisted by Cole Carrier and Parker Berge // Carrier hustled to chip the puck out of his own zone to centre, where Rowan picked it up and led a 2-on-1 with Borya Valis. Rowan attempted a pass across from left to right, but instead the puck deflected off the skate of defenceman Logan Dowhaniuk and into his own net.

EDM 1-1 at 10:57 - Dylan Guenther (9), unassisted // Guenther's speed was too much for the Pats, as he broke away from everyone and slipped it through the five hole of Sim on the breakaway to tie the game 1-1.

EDM 2-1 at 15:59 - Jacob Boucher (5), assisted by Dylan Guenther // Guenther fed a breakaway pass to Boucher, who roofed it over the glove of Sim to give the Oil Kings their first lead.

2nd Period

EDM 3-1 at 8:46 -Logan Dowhaniuk (2), assisted by Jake Neighbours (PPG) // Dowhaniuk let a wrist shot go from the point on the power play that beat Sim high through traffic.

EDM 4-1 at 15:16 - Josh Williams (8), assisted by Jakub Demek (SHG)// A strong aggressive forecheck in deep from Demek while killing a penalty proved fruitful, as he won the puck behind the net and centred to Williams, who snapped it home.

EDM 5-1 at 18:46 - Jalen Luypen (6), assisted by Carson Latimer and Dylan Guenther // A pretty pass play was capped off by Luypen on a 4-on-2 rush.

3rd Period

REG 5-2 at 1:37 - Connor Bedard (7), assisted by Borya Valis and Adam McNutt // Bedard walked right around defenceman Carson Golden in the neutral zone, then chipped the puck to his left to Valis to create an odd-man rush. Valis returned the puck to Bedard, who tapped it in for his seventh of the season.

EDM 6-2 at 4:04 - Jacob Boucher (6), assisted by Jakub Demek // Demek got to the puck first in the left corner and centred to a streaking Boucher, who one-timed it home.

REG 6-3 at 6:58 - Connor Bedard (8), assisted by Tanner Howe // Howe was able to one-hand the puck to Bedard in the neutral zone, creating a 2-on-1 with defenceman Parker Berge. Bedard executed his patented toe drag, release to perfection, beating Cossa short side to get the game within reach.

THEY SAID IT

Head Coach Dave Struch: "Played a real good team with elite players. Lots of elite depth and that's why they're at the top of the food chain it the CHL. I thought that we played a really, good, hard first period and a really, good, hard third period. Second period I think we needed a second puck if we wanted to touch it. We're going to give them a lot of credit because of who they are and what they do: how that team is built. Really like our third period, our push, our pride, our character, our drive. No quit. But we played a real good hockey team tonight."
