Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - The Prince Albert Raiders (5-9-0-1) dropped a 4-2 game to the Red Deer Rebels (12-6-1-0) on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
Nolan Allan and Hayden Pakkala were the Raiders' goal scorers in the loss. Ben King had a pair of goals for the Rebels, while Jhett Larson added two assists.
The Raiders got the scoring started 6:41 into the opening period. Zachary Wilson took a pass from Kaiden Guhle behind the net and started to the left wing. He quickly dished it back to the right post for Pakkala who snapped it through Chase Coward for his second goal in as many games. Pakkala's third goal of the season gave the Raiders an early 1-0 lead.
Blake Gustafson responded for the Rebels midway through the period. He received a pass at the top of the slot and his quick release beat Carter Serhyenko to make it a 1-1 game with 8:05 left in the opening frame.
The Rebels took the lead with a power-play goal with 5:04 to play in the first. Off a faceoff win in the Rebels' offensive zone, King collected the puck and skated to the left wing. He was able to step into a shot from the left faceoff circle that got through Serhyenko to put the Rebels ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes.
At the 6:06 mark of the second, Red Deer extended their lead. They worked the puck around the zone to Jace Weir at the right point. His shot got through a screen in front to get past Serhyenko, giving the Rebels a 3-1 advantage. The goal ended Serhyenko's night as the Raiders' netminder made 13 saves in just over 26 minutes of action.
Less than three minutes later, the Rebels added another. Larson entered the Raiders' end with King trailing just behind. Larson spun and put a pass to King to send him in on a partial break. King made a quick move to his forehand and slid the puck through Tikhon Chaika to put Red Deer up 4-1 at the 8:38 mark of the third.
The Raiders cut the lead in half with 22.6 seconds left in the middle frame. Vladislav Shilo left the puck for Harrison Lodewyk as he crossed the blue line. Lodewyk then hit a charging Nolan Allan and the Chicago Blackhawks prospect wired a shot past Coward for his second of the season, making it a 4-2 game for the Rebels heading into the third.
In the final period, the Raiders pressed to get back within one. Tyson Laventure had a chance with a quick backhander towards goal that nearly fooled Coward. Near the end of the third, Reece Vitelli's sharp-angle shot was stopped but the rebound fell to Sloan Stanick. The Rapid City, Man. product got the shot of his stick quickly, but Coward was able to deny him from the doorstep.
Coward finished the game with 18 saves to pick up the win for the Rebels. Chaika made 10 saves in relief for the Raiders.
The Raiders head to Swift Current tomorrow night to take on the Broncos at the Credit Union i-Plex. Game time is 7 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV, or head to The Rock And Iron Club House or Original Joe's to join the watch party.
