Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings fired a season high 47 shots on goal on Friday night, but could not find a way to get more than one past Nolan Maier, in a 2-1 loss to the Blades.

Maier, who was named the games first star kicked aside 46 Wheat Kings attempts, including 14 from Ridly Greig along on route to his 100th career WHL victory.

"That's the best game we've played all year," Head Coach Don MacGillivray said on the Bounce 96.1 post-game show. "We're starting to see some signs of the things we did right last year. We had pucks moving. We played fast. The only disappointing thing is, we didn't bury our chances. Maier played well and he stole one for them tonight."

Friday marked the first time all season the Wheat Kings have outshot an opponent in all three periods of a game. On the flip side, defensivly the Wheat Kings didn't give up a shot on goal in the first fourteen minutes of the hockey game. Ethan Kruger wasn't busy, turning aside 18 of 20 Blades shots.

"We had lots of energy tonight," added MacGillivray. "We got some extended time in the offensive zone. We did lots of good things, however we needed to get a better job of not letting Maier see pucks. I'm not going to fault our guys. we worked really hard, its just too bad we didn't get the first one earlier in the hockey game."

Ridly Greig finally broke the shutout bid late in the third, but it was as close as the Wheat Kings would come to mounting a comeback.

For defenseman Vincent Iorio, despite the loss this was an important game for the Wheat Kings.

"We all realize now how good of a team we have. This loss stings for sure, we were the better team tonight. But its a motivator for sure. This is an important month for us here in the home stand, so we need to get better this week and keep building."

The Wheat Kings have a rare weekend off, before returning to game action on Friday night when the Moose Jaw Warriors come to town.
