Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (53-35) used a pair of two-run home runs to beat the Worcester Red Sox (47-44) on Wednesday night, a 9-1 final score at Polar Park.
SWB got on the board four batters in to the game on a long home run from Chris Gittens. With a runner on second, Gittens blasted the tone setter, a 441-foot homer off WooSox starter Kyle Hart, putting the road team on top 2-0.
Worcester got one back in the second with a homer of its own, a Josh Ockimey solo blast that whizzed over the top of the Worcester Wall to make cut the deficit to 2-1. Ockimey, who entered the day hitting .316 in the month of August, notched his 13th home run of the year.
From there, the RailRiders' offense took over, scoring six times over the final four innings. In the fourth, Armando Alvarez delivered an RBI single after a Greg Allen double. Then, in the sixth, Rob Brantly crushed a two-run home run to right, and in the seventh, Estevan Florial ripped a run-scoring double up the right field gap to make it 6-1 in the seventh. An RBI single from Massachusetts native Max Burt came in the eighth and a two run knock by Brantly-part of a four RBI day for the catcher-ended the scoring for the night.
Hart went just 3.1 innings and took the loss, allowing the first three runs with two strikeouts, followed by 1.2 scoreless from Zack Kelly. Ryan Brasier allowed the two-run homer in the sixth along with a walk in his fourth rehab appearance with the WooSox.
Altogether, SWB scored its nine runs on 11 hits, seven of which were for extra bases. The WooSox were held to six hits and struck out 13 times, including five times against RailRiders' reliever Brian Keller, who got the win.
The WooSox continue the eight-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 4:35 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Polar Park. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 4:30 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Stephen Gonsalves (4-4, 5.07) will start a game for Worcester, while Matt Krook (2-3, 4.61) and Sean Boyle (1-0, 1.08) are expected to throw for SWB.
