NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals picked up three of four standings points last weekend against the Portland Pirates. Norfolk rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Pirates 3-2 in overtime on Friday. Rickard Rakell netted the game-winning goal with 29 seconds remaining in the extra session.

On Saturday, the Pirates turned the tables on Norfolk and put together a rally of his own. The Admirals raced out to a 3-0 first period lead in the game's first eight minutes. However, The Pirates chipped away at the lead netting a goal in the second period, and lighting the lamp twice in the final 3:30 of regulation to knot things up at three. The Pirates sailed to a 4-3 shootout victory, and extended their point streak to six games.

Tonight Norfolk continues its homestand with the Charlotte Checkers beginning at 7:30 p.m, at Scope. Norfolk will close out the week with a pair of home games on Friday and Saturday against the Providence Bruins.

STANDINGS UPDATE as of 11/27/13

The Admirals (9-6-0-4, 22pts.) currently third in the East Division, just two points back of first place Wilkes- Barre/Scranton. Norfolk sits sixth overall in the conference.

Eight teams in each conference shall qualify for the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs. Following the conclusion of each team's 76-game regular season, the three division winners in each conference will be seeded first through third (in Norfolk Admirals Weekly Release - November 27, 2013

order of regular-season points) and the next five best teams (in order of regular-season points) will be seeded fourth through eighth.

ADMIRALS' LOG

- The two meetings between the Admirals and the Portland Pirates marked the first time in nearly two years the two teams have met. The previous meeting was in January of 2011.

- The Admirals outshot the Pirates on Friday 33-26. This marked the first time this season that Norfolk has outshot an opponent this season.

- Zack Stortini reached 1,000 penalty minutes in the AHL in Friday's game vs. Pirates...Stortini currently leads the league in penalty minutes with 89.

Tonight marks the first of eight meetings on the year between these two rivals. Norfolk continues to be lead by Alex Grant's 12 points and six goals...Norfolk netminder John Gibson currently leads the AHL with a .937 save % among active goaltenders...Norfolk boasts the 2nd best penalty kill unit in the league at 89.1%, while the Checkers are ranked fifth on the power play at 22.3%....Charlotte (6-11-0-1, 13pts) is led offensively by Zach Boychuk's 14 points. Mark Flood is coming off back-to-back one goal and one assist performances.... Fans hoping to catch a glimpse of former New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro, will have to wait until another time. Dipietro voluntarily left the Checkers on good terms yesterday. Goaltender John Muse is likely to start in goal for the Checkers tonight. Muse has two shutouts on the year, and was the 2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP for Norfolk's then ECHL affiliate the Florida Everblades...Charlotte is one of three teams that has yet to score a shorthanded goal this season (Iowa, Abbotsford)... Norfolk is 13-14-1 All-Time against Charlotte.
