Portland Pirates News Release
Hartford, CT - The Pirates saw their 7 game point streak come to an end as they were defeated 4-1 by the Hartford Wolf Pack on Wednesday. Lucas Lessio tallied the lone Pirates goal in the loss.
The game got off to a hot start, as Hartford's Darroll Powe was dragged down in front of the Pirates net just 1:57 into the game and was awarded a penalty shot. Mark Visentin stoned Powe's attempt to keep the game scoreless. JT Miller got the Wolf Pack on the board 6 minutes later, beating Visentin to give Hartford a 1-0 lead at 8:03 of the first. Rookie sensation Danny Kristo gave Hartford a 2-0 advantage at 15:15 of the first period, and the Pirates had a two goal deficit after the first.
Brandon Mashinter extended the Hartford lead at 2:27 of the second, beating Visentin for his first goal of the season. The Pirates attempted to respond on their 3 power play opportunities, but failed to capitalize. As the intensity of the game picked up, a number of penalties assessed after a scrum left the Pirates on a 5 on 3 penalty kill at 16:07, but the Pirate penalty kill stepped up to kill off the two minute 2 man disadvantage.
The Pirates were given a golden opportunity just minutes into the third period, as Tobias Rieder was awarded a penalty shot 1 minute into the third, but his shot rang off the post. Lucas Lessio finally broke through for the Pirates at 5:17 of the third with the power play tally, the first power play for the Pirates in 4 games. Lessio's 4th of the year was assisted by Brandon Shinnimin. Ryan Bourque gave Hartford the 3 goal advantage again at 8:51 of the third with his third goal of the season to seal the win for the Wolf Pack.
The Pirates saw their seven game regulation unbeaten streak come to an end, as well as their 4 game overtime streak. 9 fighting majors were assessed between the two teams and a total of 72 penalty minutes were assessed during the game. The Pirates went 1 for 5 on the power play while Hartford was held scoreless on their 3 man advantages.. Mark Visentin took the loss for the Pirates to drop to 6-5-1 on the year, while Wolf Pack goaltender Jeff Malcolm earned his first professional victory for Hartford.
The Pirates get back to action on Friday against the Worcester Sharks at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for their annual Black Friday Game. Puck drops at 7 PM. The Pirates are offering a buy one get one 50% off deal at Pirates Treasure, the official merchandise store of the Pirates, as well as 20% of Flex Packs all day.
