Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators welcomed the Syracuse Crunch to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and sent them back up interstate 81 with a 5-1 loss. Andre Petersson pitched in two goals for the B-Sens while Andrew Hammond played 40 minutes of solid relief between the pipes after Nathan Lawson took a stick to the throat towards the end of the first period.
Defenseman Mike Sdao put Binghamton on the board first at the 10:26 mark of the opening period riffling a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that found the back of the net despite heavy traffic around the crease. Syracuse outshot Binghamton 12-11 in the first 20 minutes; however, Lawson turned away all chances before taking a precautionary seat the rest of the night. Crunch goaltender Riku Helenius managed to stop 10 of 11 B-Sens tries in the opening period.
Binghamton increased its lead 6:45 into the second period after Shane Prince stole the puck deep in the Crunch zone dishing it to Jim O'Brien who found a streaking Petersson. Petersson took a speeding shot on the run and beat Helenius making the score 2-0. Just under four minutes later, the Crunch drew within a score when Geoff Walker deflected home a power-play clapper from Dmitry Korobov. However, Shane Prince put the home team back on top by two with under a minute to play in the period. Stealing a pass deep in the Crunch zone, Prince stickhandled his way through traffic before the puck was knocked high off his stick and trickled over the shoulder of Helenius putting the score at 3-1 Binghamton after 40 minutes of play.
The third period was all Binghamton with Hammond playing stellar between the pipes when called on. Cole Schneider put the Sens up 4-1 when he knocked home a loose puck that found its way behind Helenius at 11:31 of the final frame. Petersson added the backbreaker at 15:14 to put the final score at 5-1 Binghamton.
Hammond earned his fifth consecutive win from his relief duty after Lawson left in the first stopping 20 of 21 shots faced. Helenius finished with 32 saves on 37 shots faced in the losing effort. Prince finished with a goal and two assists while O'Brien added two helpers giving the Petersson-O'Brien-Prince line seven total points for the night and a clean sweep of the Three Stars of the Game.
Binghamton hits the road Friday night to faceoff against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Mohegan Sun Arena. Saturday the B-Sens will be back on home ice when they host the St. John's IceCaps in a 7:05 p.m. tilt. Tickets for Saturday are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at 1-800-745-3000.
