Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch fell to the Binghamton Senators 5-1 tonight at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The loss, the team's fifth in a row, drops the club's overall record to 9-7-1-1 and gives Binghamton a 4-1-0-0 lead in the season series. Goaltender Riku Helenius, making his fifth start of the season, stopped 32 of 37 shots faced.
Binghamton defenseman Michael Sdao opened the scoring halfway through the opening frame with an unassisted tally. Sdao threw the puck on net from the near half-wall where it was deflected past Helenius to give the Senators a 1-0 lead. The Senators had missed an early scoring chance when Cole Schneider failed to convert on a penalty shot 2:39 into the period.
Binghamton goaltender Andrew Hammond replaced Nathan Lawson in net to start the second period. Lawson received medical attention from the trainer during the first period but was able to finish the frame. Lawson stopped all 12 shots he faced before being replaced by Hammond. Hammond would go on to allow one goal on 21 shots.
Andre Petersson doubled the Senators lead with a one-timer from the left circle, assisted by Jim O'Brien and Shane Prince 6:45 into the middle frame.
Crunch forward Geoff Walker cut the Senators lead in half with his first goal in a Crunch uniform at the 10:35 mark of the second period. Walker redirected a Dmitry Korobov point shot past Hammond for a power-play goal. Defenseman JP Cote picked up the secondary assist.
Binghamton carried a 3-1 lead into the second intermission after Prince scored with less than a minute to play in period. Helenius made an initial save which popped the puck up and over his shoulder and into the net.
The Senators scored twice in the second half of the third period to bring the final score to 5-1. Cole Schnieder scored at the 11:31 mark by crashing Helenius' net and taping a trickling puck over the goal line. O'Brien scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Petersson and Prince, with 4:46 remaining in regulation.
The Crunch will host the St. John's IceCaps at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29.
