NAILERS WEEK IN REVIEW

January 29-February 5

Friday, February 2 Wheeling 3 @ Dayton 6

The Wheeling Nailers made their second trip of the season to the Nutter Center in Dayton on

Friday night, resulting in a 6-3 loss. The Nailers allowed two goals in the final eight minutes of

the first period, including a shorthanded mark, and were behind to begin the second. Justin

Maiser scored his second of the game early in the second to increase the Bombers lead to three.

Wheeling responded with three goals before the end of the second to tie the game at three. Joe

Gunether put the Nailers on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal at 7:37 of the second.

Within the final four minutes of the period, Wheeling capitalized on their first power play in

three games. Ryan Moren tapped in a pass from Jordan Cameron to bring the Nailers within one.

Jon Smyth's third tied the game at three with just 26 seconds left in the period by beating Adam

Berkhoel on a wrist shot. The hat-trick goal by Maiser in the opening minute of the third gave

Dayton the lead for good. Yanick Tifu would add the final two goals, including an empty netter, to seal the deal for Dayton. Brian Gratz stopped 27 of 32 shots on goal in his first career ECHL start.

Saturday, February 3 Wheeling 1 vs. Cincinnati 4

The Nailers dropped their third game in a row for the third time this season after falling to the first place Cyclones by a score of 4-1 Saturday night at WesBanco Arena. The Cyclones opened the scoring at 5:42 of the first period when Brian Mullaly softly flipped the puck toward the goal from the blue line, and it found its way through multiple bodies and past a screened Brian Gratz to make it 1-0. Sam Ftorek made it a two goal game with a power play goal following an elbowing penalty to the Nailers. Ftorek rifled a shot from the point that beat Gratz over his glove. The first period ended with the Cyclones leading the Nailers 2-0. The visitors added their third goal at 3:12 of the second. It was another power-play goal. Jean-Michel Daoust gathered a rebound and lifted the puck just out of the reach of Gratz's glove hand. The teams entered the locker rooms for the second intermission with the score still 3-0. The Nailers got back in the game at 1:25 of the third period when Joe Guenther took a cross ice pass from Adam Edinger and buried it past Ben Gray to make the game 3-1 in favor of the Cyclones. Jon Foster was credited with the second assist. With 12:26 to go in the game, the Cyclones took back their three goal lead. Jason Deitsch and Sam Ftorek skated in on a 2-on-1 with Deitsch sliding the puck to Ftorek who slammed it home to make it 4-1. It was Ftorek's second goal of the game.
