Aces' Gustafson Named RBC Financial Group Saver Of The Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - Derek Gustafson of the Alaska Aces is the RBC Financial Group ECHL Saver of the Month for January.

Gustafson was 8-0-0 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .944 as defending Kelly Cup champion Alaska went 11-2-1 in January to lead the ECHL with 58 points (28-11-2).

The 27-year-old opened the month with back-to-back shutouts against Utah stopping all 26 shots in a 7-0 win on Jan. 3 and making 22 saves in a 6-0 win on Jan. 6. He extended his scoreless streak to 140:40 before allowing a goal in the first period of a 3-2 win against Victoria on Jan. 12 and then had 25 saves in a 5-1 win against Victoria on Jan. 13. He extended his road winning streak to three games with wins at Long Beach and Stockton on Jan. 19 and 20. He closed out the month with back-to-back home wins against Stockton, including a season-high 39 saves in a 4-3 shootout win on Jan. 24, to extend his home winning streak to six games and his overall winning streak to nine games.

He began February with a 15-7-1 record and was tied for third in the league with three shutouts and sixth with a goals-against average of 2.45 in 23 games for Alaska.

Gustafson is in his seventh professional season and has played in the ECHL, the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League and the National Hockey League where he went 1-3-0 with a goals-against average of 2.51 in four games with the Minnesota Wild in 2000-01. He posted his NHL win on Mar. 9, 2001 against the New York Islanders.

In 2003-04 he was 28-14-0 with five shutouts to lead Louisiana to the East Division title while finishing second in the league with a goals-against average of 2.09 and second in voting for the ECHL Goalie of the Year.

Runners Up: Dave McKee, Augusta (8-0-0, 2.15 GAA, .911 save pct.) and Dan Turple, Gwinnett (7-0-1, 3.08 GAA, .904 GAA).
