Wheeling Nailers News Release

READING, PA - Goaltender Matt Dalton made 45 saves to help lead the Reading Royals to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Wheeling Nailers at the Sovereign Center Wednesday night. Despite the loss, the Nailers pick up a key point in the standings, leaving them with 77 points with two game remaining.

The Royals came out firing in the first and forced the Nailers into penalty trouble. Reading converted on their second opportunity with the man advantage halfway through the period. Ryan Cruthers skipped a bouncing puck toward the net and it slipped past the right side of Peter Delmas for the goal. Moments later Reading received a 5-on3- power play for a full two minutes, but the Nailers second ranked penalty kill unit came up with the big kill to keep it a 1-0 Reading Lead.

After the big penalty kill, the Nailers started to get things in gear, and received a 5-on-3 power play of their own. With a good puck movement the around the perimeter, Wheeling's Kyle Bushee slid the puck to the backside circle to Joey Haddad. Haddad blistered a shot past Reading goaltender Matt Dalton to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the opening period.

The Nailers used the power play again to take their first lead of the game. After creating several quality scoring opportunities which were stopped by Dalton, Wheeling lulled the Reading penalty killers asleep. Tim Crowder quietly circled from behind the net and took a feed and fired the puck on the backside past Dalton, to give his club a 2-1 lead. The goal was the first for Crowder as a member of the Wheeling Nailers, and his 14th of the season. The Nailers took the 2-1 lead into the second break.

The Nailers held off the Royals for the first 15 minutes of the third. However, just like they have done all year, Reading finds away to stay alive. While on the power play Jarred Ross fired a slapshot from the point which was re-directed in front by Olivier Labelle past Delmas for the game tying goal, sending the game to overtme.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in overtime, which sent the game to a shootout. Wheeling was unable to craxk Dalton in the shootout, while Reading received goals from Yannick Riendeau and Andrew Sarauer to seal the 3-2 shootout victory. All four goals in the game were scored on the power player. The Nailers outshot the Royals 47-27.
