Derlago Hat Trick Triggers 7-2 Steelheads Win Over Utah
March 30, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
(Boise, ID) - Mark Derlago scored three times and Evan Barlow added four points as the Idaho Steelheads rolled past the Utah Grizzlies, 7-2, in the regular-season home finale at Qwest Arena in front of 4,742 fans Wednesday night.
Derlago now has 43 goals, setting a new Steelheads single-season record. He bested the mark of 42, which he set last season.
Idaho jumped out quickly during a wild first period of play. First, it was Tristan King weaving in and out of Utah defenders before snapping a shot past Andrew Engelage at 2:38 of the first period. It was King's first shift back on the ice after missing nearly six weeks with an injury. His third tally of the season was assisted by Barlow.
The Steelheads didn't wait long to add on. At 3:29, Geoff Irwin turned a turnover into Chad Nehring's first professional goal. Irwin picked up the errant puck, fed Nehring, and the rookie out of Lake Superior State beat Engelage low to make it 2-0. Just over two minutes later, Weston Tardy's power-play marker made it 3-0 and then Derlago made it 4-0 at 7:20 on the first on a feed from Kael Mouillierat and Tyler Ludwig.
Utah got goals from Hugo Carpentier and Ryley Grantham in the first period to make things interesting, but Derlago's second of the period at 17:13 - off a fortunate bounce off the end boards - gave Idaho five first-period goals, a season-high for one period.
Idaho scored once in the second (Barlow) and once in the third (Derlago) to finish out the scoring, with the big Wednesday-night crowd giving Derlago a hearty ovation when it was announced that his goal from Barlow at 8:46 of the third set a new single-season record for the Steelheads. Barlow finished the game with a goal and three assists, giving him 52 points in 37 games since rejoining the Steelheads from Europe on December 31.
Rookie goaltender Jerry Kuhn was solid in his professional debut in net for Idaho, turning aside 21 of 23 Utah shots. Engelage stopped 20 of 27 for Utah.
The Steelheads power play, ranked number one in the ECHL, flexed its muscle, too, converting four of five opportunities with the man advantage. Utah was 0-2 on the power play.
The final home game of the regular season for Idaho is Wednesday night when the Steelheads host the Utah Grizzlies. Fans asking for the "KTIK Section" can get tickets for just $13.50 per seat.
