Nailers Help Promote ATV Safety

March 23, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV- West Virginia has the highest per capita death rate in the United States when it comes to ATV accidents, including a state record 53 deaths last year.

Because of this staggering statistic, the Wheeling Nailers will be doing their best to promote ATV safety.

During intermissions when everyone's favorite mascot, Spike, is riding his ATV, he will be wearing a specially made and fitted helmet.

Staci Trudo, the Trauma Program Director at Ohio Valley Medical Center and a Nailers season ticket holder, thought of the concept while attending a game this year.

"Whenever I would see Spike out there pulling around Buck, it would make my heart stop," she said. "I've seen the damage that ATV's can cause first hand so it's really important for Spike to be setting a good example for children."

The helmet is a combination of chicken wire, fabric and paper mache and was made by Martins Ferry students Amanda Lewis and Katie Banks, both 17-years-old.

Check out the Nailers, Spike and his new helmet tomorrow night when the Nailers take on the Trenton Titans at 7:30 p.m. at WesBanco Arena.

It's Pack the House Night and all tickets are just $5 in any section. Tickets are available by calling 304-234-GOAL, by visiting the Nailers team store located at 1315 Main St. in downtown Wheeling or online at www.WheelingNailers.com.
