Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, posted four unanswered goals to put the visiting Long Beach squad in the dog house and continue their climb to playoff position. Victoria Goaltender Bryan Bridges made 34 saves to lead the home team to a 5-1 win in front of 4,699 fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Kiel McLeod scored his 27th goal of the season to give Victoria the 1-0 lead at 8:36 into the first period. McLeod scooped a breakaway pass from veteran Defenseman Steve Lingren along the right wing and smacked a wristshot off the netcam in the center of the mesh behind Goaltender Brett Jaeger.

Bryan Bridges made 18 saves in the first frame alone, but Long Beach snuck a goal to tie with 26 seconds remaining. After an Ice Dogs slapshot from the high slot, a wraparound attempt was foiled but the rebound was banged in by Alexei Smirnov at the left post.

Starting at 13 seconds into the second stanza, Victoria scored four straight goals to carry the momentum in their favour. Goldie tallied his 36th goal of the season beating Jaeger glove side on a breakaway feed from Ryan Wade. With 2:51 left in the period, Goldie earned his second goal of the game tucking in a rebound off the post from a point shot by rookie Defenseman Matt Kelly.

After the Salmon Kings defeated a four-minute Long Beach powerplay advantage, Jordan Krestanovich posted his 13th goal of the season for the Victoria 4-1 lead. Krestanovich fished in the rebound off a Wade shot from the left circle, and slipped it in backhand at 7:50 into the third period. On Victoria's sixth powerplay of the game, Milan Gajic wired a shot from the point and it trickled five-hole on Jaegar with 15 seconds remaining.

Final: 5-1 Salmon Kings

Bridges earned his tenth win of the season, and Jaeger suffered his 23rd loss. Victoria was 1 for 6 on the powerplay and Long Beach was 0 for 4 with the man advantage. The Ice Dogs outshot the Salmon Kings 35-31. The Salmon Kings (29-32-1-3) and Long Beach Ice Dogs (24-37-0-3) collide for game two tomorrow at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre starting at 7:05 p.m.
