Gladiators Clipped by Wildcatters, 2-1

The Texas Wildcatters ground out a 2-1 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, Texas. Gwinnett slips into a tie for second place in the South Division with the loss as the Florida Everblades picked up a win over the Columbia Inferno tonight to move into first place in the Division. Gwinnett falls to 38-20-7 on the season with the loss.

Texas took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators with a power play goal midway through the first period. Parked along the goal line behind the Gladiators defense, Mike Bayrack tapped the puck past Gladiators netminder Dan Turple to give the Wildcatters a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Paiement and Mike Madill set up Bayrack to collect the assists on the goal at the 12:02 mark of the first period.

Andy Contois tied the game at 1-1 at the 14:10 mark of the second period. Contois slipped past the Texas defense and took an outlet pass from Mike Vigilante and beat Wildcatters netminder Matt Yeats on a breakaway for the marker. Scott Lehman also had an assist for the Gladiators on Contois' 19th goal of the season.

Texas regained the lead at the 4:26 mark of the third period. Derick Martin ripped a slap shot from the left wing point past Turple for the goal. Alan Sirois and Mark Rooneem collected the assists on the goal for the Wildcatters giving Texas a 2-1 lead.

Turple finished with 33 saves for the Gladiators in the loss as Texas out shot the Gladiators 35-32 in the contest. Gwinnett was held scoreless on four power play chances as Texas converted on one of four power play opportunities in the game.
