Bombers Move into First Place
March 23, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- With a chance to pass the Cincinnati Cyclones for first place in the North Division, the Bombers played some of their best hockey all year in front of 2,974 Bombers faithful at the E.J. Nutter Center.
The Bombers came out firing in the first period, recording 10 shots on net before the Johnstown Chiefs recorded their first shot on Bombers' goaltender Terry Denike (20 saves, Win). As the story has been all year long for the Bombers, the Chiefs were kept in the game by their goalie Morgan Cey (30 saves, Loss). The Notre Dame standout stopped all 18 of the Bombers attempts in the first period. The first would end in a 0-0 stalemate.
The second period started the same until the Bombers took advantage of a Chiefs turnover and Ryan Reid extended his eight game point streak finding Brent Walton, who then found Joe Cullen (10) who put the puck past Cey. Dayton would hold the lead for seven minutes. Johnstown went on the power play after a questionable delay-of-game call on Denike. At the 9:53 the Chiefs tied the game with a power play goal from Maxime Boiclair, with assists from Andrew Martens and Zbynek Hrdel. It looked as though the period would end in a tie, but with one minute left Bryce Anderson (1) recorded his first professional career goal with assists from Tim Konsorada and Scott Ford. The period ended 2-1 in favor of the Bombers.
The third period would be all Bombers. Yannick Tifu (26) would add insurance, catching a pass from Reid and out-skating the entire Chiefs team and making a beautiful move past Cey. The game would be put out of reach after a Johnstown penalty gave the Bombers a power play opportunity and capitalized. Tim Konsorada cycled the puck to Paul Kelly who found a wide open Corey LeClair on the point. LeClair (5) hammered a low slap shot into the net. Denike played a solid game in net stopping 20 of 21 shots and the game ended 4-1. The win boosts the Bombers past the Cincinnati Cyclones into first place in the ultra-competitive North Division. The Bombers face off against the Chiefs again tomorrow night at 7 pm at the friendly confines of the E.J. Nutter Center.
