March 23, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - B.J. Crombeen's power play goal late in regulation coupled with shootout goals by Derek Nesbitt and Marty Flichel helped lead the Steelheads to a 2-1 shootout win over the Alaska Aces in front of 4,525 fans at Qwest Arena.
Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (17 saves) stopped all four Aces' skaters in the shootout for the club's sixth shootout win of the season and their 17th on home ice. The win also helped the Steelheads (36-24-2-3) keep pace for the fourth spot in the National Conference playoff race, while also snapping their three-game, home losing streak. The Aces (46-14-2-4) meanwhile are just eight points from clinching their second consecutive Brabham Cup, awarded to the ECHL's top regular season team.
Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, the Steelheads went on a two-man advantage and they were able to tie the contest off an offensive zone draw. After Flichel won the face-off from the right circles, Nesbitt got the puck to defenseman Darrell Hay who fired a shot off his back foot that caromed off Crombeen and past Aces' goaltender Derek Gustafson (46 saves). Crombeen's fourth goal in just six games this season came at 17:49.
The only tally through the first two periods came at 7:17 of the opening frame, when Aces' leading scorer, Kimbi Daniels, redirected a right point shot by Peter Metcalf past Silverthorn for a 1-0 lead.
After 40 minutes of play, the Steelheads trailed 1-0, but led in shots 20-13.
For the match, the Steelheads out-shot the Aces 48-18, which included a season-high, 26 third period opportunities. The 48 shots allowed is the most the Aces have given up this season, and the second most the Steelheads have tallied in a game. The Steelheads finished one-for-seven on the power play, while the Aces went zero-for-four. Silverthorn now has 31 wins, while Gustafson suffered his first shootout defeat.
