Maple Leafs Game Recap

March 11, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release

March 12, 2003: Leafs 4 Vs. Monarchs 3

First the good news. The St. John's Maple Leafs pulled out one of their most exhilarating victories of the season last night at Mile One Stadium. Now the bad news. Every team they are chasing for a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs also won. Alexei Ponikarovsky's 20th goal of the season at the 1:03 mark of overtime lifted St. John's past the visiting Manchester Monarchs 4-3 in American Hockey League action at Mile One Stadium. It was a huge victory for the Maple Leafs (25-38-5-1) and came in a fashion that not many have seen in the middle of the North Atlantic in quite some time. For the second night in a row, red hot Josh Holden was named the Molson Canadian first star of the game and it was his second goal of the game and 22nd of the season at the 18:50 mark of the third period that tied the score at 3-3 and set the stage for Pony's heroics. For starters, the Leafs were on the short end of the stick in the manpower advantage department for two and a half periods of hockey, but that all changed in the extra session.
