Blues Acquire G Chris Osgood From Islanders for Justin Papineau

St. Louis, MO, March 11, 2003 - Senior Vice President and General Manager Larry Pleau announced today that the club has acquired goaltender Chris Osgood and a 2003 third round selection from the New York Islanders in exchange for center Justin Papineau and the Blues second round selection in the 2003 Entry Draft.

Osgood, 30, has appeared in 37 games with the Islanders this season, posting a 17-14-4 record, along with a 2.92 goals against average. He has missed 19 games with an ankle sprain and returned to action stopping 16 of 18 shots on March 8 versus New Jersey. Osgood played in a career high 66 games last season with the Islanders, posting a 32-25-6 record, along with a 2.50 goals against average.

The 5-11, 180-pound goaltender has posted 30-or-more wins in seven of his last nine NHL seasons, posting a career best 39-6-5 record, along with 2.17 goals against average during the 1995-96 season. The two-time Stanley Cup winner, backstopped the Red Wings to the 1997-98 Championship, recording a 16-6 record, along with a 2.12 goals against average. He set a Red Wing record by recording a 21-game unbeaten streak (19-0-2) and notched a career-best, 13-game winning streak during the 1995-96 season. Osgood has earned the Jennings Trophy on two occasions (1996-97, 1995-96), along with teammates Mike Vernon and Kevin Hodson.

The two-time NHL All Star has appeared in 492 career NHL games, posting a 270-149-56 record lifetime, along with a 2.42 goals against average. Osgood has appeared in 75 post-season games, registering a 41-29 record and a 2.20 goals against average. The Peace River, Alberta native was originally Detroit's third selection, 54th overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

The 5'11" Papineau is fourth in IceCats scoring with 37 points. The winner of the 2003 CCM Fastest Skater Competition, Justin garnered 21 goals and 16 assists in 44 IceCats games: 44(21/16/37). A third round selection by the Blues in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Justin notched his first career NHL point, an assist, on February 11th in Buffalo. He skated in two games in early December, recording no points. He scored his first career NHL goal on February 27th vs. Edmonton. Papineau had two goals and one assist in 11 games with the Blues this season, including the 2-1 overtime game-winner on March 4th vs. Nashville: 11(2/1/3). He departs the IceCats as Worcester's all-time goal leader, having scored 66 career goals donning the IceCats teal & blue.
