Wild Acquires Goalie Johan Holmqvist

HOUSTON - Houston Aeros President and General Manager Dave Barr announced today the Minnesota Wild (National Hockey League) has acquired goaltender Johan Holmqvist (YOO-han HOLM-kwist) from the New York Rangers (NHL) in exchange for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat. Holmqvist will join the Aeros for Thursday's contest versus the Grand Rapid Griffins. Houston plays in San Antonio tonight.

Holmqvist, 24 (5/24/78), has spent the majority of the season with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). In 35 games, he has posted a record of 14 wins, 13 losses and five ties and a .910 saves percentage. His 2.65 Goals Against Average ranks 20th in the AHL. Holmqvist also appeared in one game with the Rangers, allowing two goals in 39 minutes of work. The Tolfta, Sweden-native has played three seasons with the Wolf Pack. In 2001-02, he played in 48 games, registering 26 wins, 12 losses and six ties with a 3.07 GAA. Holmqvist played in 43 games for Hartford in 2000-01. He went 19-14-4 with a 2.89 GAA. He also made his NHL debut with the Rangers in 2000-01, recording two losses in two games.

Prior to joining the Rangers organization, Holmqvist played three seasons for Brynas IF Gavle in the Swedish Elite League. He appeared in 117 games with a 2.67 GAA. He won the Swedish Elite League championship in 1998-99 and was a First Team All-Star in 1999-2000. Holmqvist will join Derek Gustafson in net for Houston as goaltenders Dieter Kochan and Frederic Cloutier are injured.
