Manchester Monarchs News Release
EL SEGUNDO, CA. - The Los Angeles Kings have assigned defenseman Joe Corvo and left winger Derek Bekar to the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor announced today.
In addition, left winger Chris Schmidt has been loaned to the Monarchs on a conditioning assignment.
Corvo, 25, has appeared in 37 games for the Kings this season, recording nine points (5-4=9) and 12 penalty minutes, with his five goals leading all NHL rookie defensemen. The 6-1, 218-pound native of Oak Park, Illinois, began the season with the Monarchs and led all AHL defensemen in scoring with 26 points (8-18=26) and eight penalty minutes in 26 games at the time of his initial recall. Originally selected by the Kings in the fourth-round (83rd overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Corvo made his NHL debut on December 14, 2001, versus the Pittsburgh Penguins and recorded his first NHL point with an assist on January 6.
Bekar, 27, was recalled (on an emergency basis) by the Kings from the Monarchs on February 28. He has appeared in seven games for the Kings this season with zero points and four penalty minutes. In 36 games with the Monarchs this season, the 6-2, 199-pound native of Burnaby, British Columbia, has recorded 21 points (9-12=21) and 34 penalty minutes. Signed by the Kings as a free agent on September 25, 2001, Bekar appeared in one other career NHL game, with the St. Louis Blues, during the 1999-00 season.
Schmidt, 27, has played in 10 games for the Kings this season after being recalled from Manchester on February 8. The 6-3, 212-pound native of Beaver Lodge, Alberta, began the season with the Monarchs appearing in 49 games and recording 22 points (12-10=22) with 58 penalty minutes. Signed as a free agent by the Kings on April, 30, 2001, Schmidt made his NHL debut on February 11 in Nashville versus the Predators and recorded his first NHL point with an assist February 25 in Pittsburgh. He was originally drafted by the Kings in the fifth-round (111th overall) in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
The Kings this afternoon travel to Tampa Bay, where the club begins a three-game road trip against the Lightning on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. (PT). That game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 710-KSPN and along the Kings Radio Network.
