Manchester Monarchs News Release
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - Josh Holden's power play goal with 6:49 left in the third period spoiled the return of defenseman Chris Aldous and Pavel Rosa to active duty as the St. John's Maple Leafs edged the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2, at Mile One Stadium in St. John's on Tuesday night. The win was the first in four games for the Leafs, who trail the Springfield Falcons by seven points in the chase for the 10th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The setback for the Monarchs was their fifth on a current 10-game break from the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester. The Monarchs, who are winless in three games overall, conclude their 10-game road stint on Wednesday night in St. John's with a rematch against the Leafs. Despite the loss, the Monarchs remain in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 75 points. They are tied with the idle Portland Pirates (75 points) and trail the idle Binghamton Senators (76 points) by one point for the fourth place slot. The Monarchs have played one less game than the Senators and two less games than the Pirates.
A spirited fight between heavy weights Kip Brennan and Doug Doull, their second showdown of the night, led to the Maple Leafs man advantage and Holden's eventual game-winner. Following the tussle, referee Francois Laurent, who earlier in the game nullified an apparent Monarchs goal, gave Brennan an extra minor for instigating. Holden and the Leafs scored on the ensuing power play and the goal, assisted by Nathan Barrett and Brad Leeb, was Holden 20th.
Steve Kelly and Rosa assisted on Eric Healey's team-leading 33rd goal as the Monarchs tied the game at 2-2 with 8:37 remaining. Healey took Kelly's set-up from the left circle and one-timed his shot by goaltender Mikael Tellqvist.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 until defenseman Anders Eriksson's blue line blast slipped by Monarchs goaltender Travis Scott 6:44 into the final period. Gavey, who collected the Maple Leafs first goal, assisted.
Three goals were scored in the opening period, but only two counted. Barely two minutes into the game, Dan Welch beat Tellqvist with a wrist shot from the left circle, but his celebration was cut short when Laurent waved off the goal and instead whistled Kent Davyduke with a major penalty for high sticking. Regan Kelly picked up the only assist on Gavey's 11th marker of the season, scored on the power play at 7:10.
The Monarchs power play, which had been ranked number one all season but fell from the top spot last week, sparked the Monarchs later in the period as Steve Kelly tied the game with his 19th goal at 18:30. Healey extended his point streak to four games by assisting on the play. The Monarchs were granted the man advantage after Luca Cereda was sent to the box for tripping 60 seconds earlier.
The Monarchs (31-21-9-4, 75 points) play their 10th consecutive game away from the Verizon Wireless Arena when they meet the St. John Maple Leafs at Mile One Stadium on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. The Monarchs return home on Friday for a match with the Lowell Lock Monsters at 7:35 p.m. Only a few hundred tickets remain for Friday's game, which will be broadcast on the Monarchs Radio Network and on AT&T3 as part of the channel's Hockey Night In New England package.
