Penguins Fall to Syracuse, 4-2

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Monday, March 10, 2003) - Kent McDonell recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 4-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before a crowd of 8,207 at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.

After a scoreless first period, Syracuse took a 1-0 lead early in the second period when Matt Davidson scored his 18th goal of the season at 9:33. But less than a minute into the third period, the Penguins tied the game on Michal Sivek's short-handed goal. Sivek scored his tenth goal of the season and third in the last two games 24 seconds into the period.

The Crunch would regain the lead later in the period on Don MacLean's power play at 8:06, but the Penguins answered right back and tied the game 11 seconds later on Milan Kraft's tenth goal of the season at the 8:17 mark.

Syracuse, which never trailed in the game, took the lead for good on McDonell's 12th goal of the season at 10:06. Jeremy Reich sealed the win with an empty net goal with 1:31 left in the game.

With the win, the Crunch improved to 22-35-6-4, while the Penguins' fell to 29-27-5-5 on the season.

Syracuse goaltender Karl Goehring made 30 saves to improve his record to 13-18-2, while Jean-Sebastien Aubin finished with 28 saves in a losing effort for the Penguins.

The Penguins host the Saint John Flames on Wednesday in the final game of a three-game homestand at 7:05 p.m. at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza. Plenty of tickets are still available for the game.
