Norfolk Tides News Release

With two outs in the top of the first, Zach Jarrett could have been out on a foul ball but Charlotte first baseman Zach Remillard lost the pop fly in the sun. On the next pitch, Jarrett hit his fifth home run of the season to left-center to put the Tides up, 1-0. Jarrett would finish the game a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two runs.

Into the bottom of the second, Seby Zavala was able to respond for Charlotte and hit a two-out solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. It's the second night in a row that Norfolk scored first with a solo home run and for Charlotte to respond with a homer themselves.

The Knights scored two more runs in the third inning when Blake Rutherford hit an RBI single to score Nick Williams. Rutherford then scored on a Jake Burger double to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead.

Norfolk was able to take that lead back in the bottom of the third. Jarrett hit a single and then stole second base to get in scoring position. Tyler Nevin knocked in Jarrett with a single and then advanced to second on a fielding error. After Brett Cumberland was hit by his Minor League leading 18th pitch of the season, him and Jarrett advanced on a groundball and then scored on a Mason McCoy single to make it 4-3, Tides.

Dean Kremer settled after the third inning, retiring eight in a row into the sixth inning. He was able to get two outs in the sixth allowing a single, but Mikie Mahtook doubled to put runners on second and third base. He would walk Zavala to load the bases and then each of those runners scored on two wild pitches, with Cumberland throwing the ball away for an error on the first wild pitch. Konner Wade would relieve Kremer and get out of the inning with the Tides trailing 6-4.

Despite earning the loss, Kremer struck out a season-high nine batters, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks in 5.2 innings pitched.

The Tides were able to get runners to second base in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to score both times. Charlotte was able to tack on another run in the bottom of the eighth and Nik Turley closed out the Tides for them in the ninth, defeating Norfolk, 7-4.

Game three-of-six in the series starts tomorrow night in Charlotte, with LHP Zac Lowther (0-2, 5.18) making the start for Norfolk while RHP Jonathan Stiever (2-3, 5.94) will start for the Knights. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
