St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - Jose Miranda turned 23 on Tuesday. He invited everyone to his party and gave them a show none of them would soon forget. In his first game at Triple-A, Miranda went 5-6 with a career high three homer runs and a career tying high six RBI. All nine Saints collected a hit and they pounded a season high seven home runs in a 15-4 trouncing of the Omaha Storm Chasers at CHS Field in front of 6,676.

Miranda made his presence felt immediately. The #16 prospect in the Minnesota Twins system led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to left-center, his first of the season, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Willians Astudillo singled to left and Mark Contreras doubled to right-center, moving Astudillo to third. That brought up Damek Tomscha who crushed a three-run homer to right-center, his second in as many games and seventh of the year, to make it 4-0.

In the second the Storm Chasers got on the board as Bubba Starling reached on a one out single to left-center. With two outs, Nick Dini got aboard on an infield single to second that put runners at first and second. An RBI single to right by Alcides Escobar made it 4-1.

The Storm Chasers added another in the third as Gabriel Cancel doubled with one out. With one out, Cancel stole third and scored on the throwing error by catcher Astudillo to make it 4-2.

Miranda sent the crowd into a frenzy for the second time on the night in the third. With the bases loaded and two outs Miranda clubbed a grand slam to left, the fourth grand slam of his career, to put the Saints on top 8-2.

In the fourth, Tomscha joined the multi-homer club with a solo blast to left, his second of the game and eighth of the season, giving the Saints a 9-2 lead.

In the fifth the Saints blasted three home runs led by Miranda again. For the first time in his career he hit three home runs, a solo home run that just landed inside the fair pole making it 10-2. Two batters later Brent Rooker blasted a solo homer high off the batter's eye in center, his 12th of the season, increasing the lead to 11-2. Two batters after that Mark Contreras drilled a solo homer to center, his fifth of the season, making it 12-2.

In the sixth the Saints kept pouring it on as Drew Maggi led off with an infield single to second and moved to second on the throwing error. With Maggi at third and one out, Keon Broxton's infield single scored Maggi to make it 13-2. Miranda then doubled down the first base line to put runners at second and third. The five hits for Miranda tied a career high. It was the third time he's accomplished the feat, the last time came just five days ago at Double-A Wichita. Two batters later Rooker made it 15-2 with a two-run single to right-center.

The Saints pitching staff struck out a season high 16 with Yennier Cano fanning two, Robinson Leyer one, Kyle Barraclough had four, Ian Hamilton also had four and Andrew Vasquez recorded five.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the six-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Andrew Albers (2-3, 5.70) to the mound against Storm Chasers RHP Scott Blewett (3-2, 5.75). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
