Records to Forget, Saints Walk Triple-A Franchise Record 20 in Largest Defeat, 19-3 to WooSox

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints were riding high after a three-game sweep in Indianapolis over the weekend as they headed to CHS Field for their home opener on Tuesday night against the Worcester Red Sox. Unfortunately for the Saints, their perfect record was blemished as they walked a franchise record 20 WooSox, the most in the International League since at least 2005 (as far back as the stats go), and allowed a franchise record 10 runs in the sixth inning as they fell 19-3, the largest loss in Triple-A franchise history.

The WooSox sent 12 men to the plate and pounded out seven hits, including three home runs, and took advantage of four walks. Nick Sogard led off with a double and with one out the next four hitters reached. Kristian Campbell and Mickey Gasper walked to load the bases. A back pick to first by catcher Noah Cardenas was bounced in the dirt and caromed off first baseman Eric Wagaman allowing a run to score making it 1-0. Mickey Romero then knocked in a run with a single to center putting the WooSox up 2-0. Allan Castro collected his first Triple-A hit, a three-run homer to left, increasing the lead to 5-0. With two outs a walk to Jason Delay chased Christian MacLeod. Raul Brito came out of the bullpen and was greeted by back-to-back home runs from Vinny Capra, his first, and Sogard, his first, to finish off an eight run first.

Oswaldo Arcia put the Saints on the board with a solo homer in the second, his first of the season, making it 8-1.

The WooSox utilized two more walks in the fourth to put up a run. With two outs and nobody on, back-to-back walks to Capra and Sogard put runners at first and second. Nate Eaton increased the lead to 9-1 with an RBI single to left-center.

In the bottom of the inning the Saints loaded the bases with nobody out on an Emmanuel Rodriguez single to right and back-to-back walks. Noah Cardenas drew a bases loaded walk to get the Saints within 9-2. A double play groundout by Kaelen Culpepper knocked home Arcia making it 9-3.

For the second time in the game the WooSox batted around sending 13 men to the plate as the Saints allowed a franchise record 10 runs in the sixth inning. The Saints walked six more hitters, allowed four hits and committed a costly error. The WooSox loaded the bases with two walks and a single. With one out Campbell singled to right, scoring a run and the ball was misplayed by Rodriguez allowing two other runs to score putting the WooSox up 12-3. Three straight walks forced in a run to make it 13-3. A two-run double by Delay and a grand slam from Eaton put the WooSox up 19-3.

Saints position player Tanner Schobel pitched the final 2.0 innings and didn't allow a run on one hit and two walks.

The teams combined for 29 walks, a franchise record for the Saints and an opponent.

The same two teams meet in game two of a six-game series on Wednesday afternoon. The game has been moved up from 6:37 p.m. to 1:07 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints send RHP Andrew Bash (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against WooSox RHP Jack Anderson (NR).
