Power Outage, Saints Fall 1-0 to Clippers

COLUMBUS, OH - It was only three weeks ago that the St. Paul Saints and Columbus Clippers played a wild six-game series at Huntington Park. The Saints set a franchise record with 22 homers, and the Clippers hit 18 of their own. The Saints scored in double figures in three of the six games and the Clippers put up 19 in the first game of the series. The unthinkable happened on Tuesday night as only one run was scored between the two teams as the Saints fell 1-0.

The lone run of the game happened in the second inning when George Valera led off for the Clippers with a double to right-center and Milan Tolentino walked. With one out Dayan Frias lined an RBI single into left putting the Clippers up 1-0. Germán Márquez, who started for the Saints, was the hard luck loser going 5.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking three and striking out three.

The best opportunity for the Saints to score came in the third. Tanner Schobel and David Bañuelos led off the inning with back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second. A fly out to the wall in right field by Alan Roden moved Schobel to third. Aaron Sabato then grounded out to third that moved Bañuelos to second, but kept Schobel at third. After a walk to Matt Wallner loaded the bases, Gabby Gonzalez flew out to center ending the inning.

The Clippers retired 11 Saints in a row from that walk to Wallner until a one out single by Cody Morissette in the seventh. He moved to second on a wild pitch, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

In the eighth and ninth the Saints got the leadoff man on with singles, but both times they were erased by double plays.

Jack Anderson was magnificent out of the bullpen for the Saints pitching 3.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out three.

It was the second 1-0 loss of the season for the Saints, with the other coming April 7 at Toledo and the ninth 1-0 loss in Triple-A franchise history.

The same two teams meet in game two of a six-game series on Wednesday night at Huntington Park at 5:35 p.m. (CT). The Saints send LHP Aaron Rozek (3-6, 4.50) to the mound against Clippers RHP Yorman Gomez (1-5, 6.99). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM presented by Northland Ford Dealers.
