Toledo Home Run Barrage Hands Bats 5-3 Loss

The Louisville Bats began their final series of the 2026 season with a 5-3 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night.

Bats starter Carson Spiers struggled in the first, allowing a pair of hits as the Mud Hens opened the scoring. But after the first, Spiers shut down the Mud Hens. He allowed a single in both the second and third. After the leadoff single in the third, Spiers retired the next 12 hitters he faced to end a quality start. Over 6.0 innings, he allowed one run on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts, tying for the most by any Bats starter this season.

The Bats offense responded. Michael Chavis led off the second with his 25th home run of the season, a 416-foot blast to center to tie the game. Orlando Arcia put the Bats ahead with an RBI single to center in the third, and a Noelvi Marte sacrifice fly scored Arica in the fifth.

Chase Petty was first out of the Louisville bullpen, looking to protect a 3-1 lead in the seventh. He was unable to as Corey Julks and James Outman connected on back-to-back home runs to tie the game. Two hitters later, Seby Zavala put the Mud Hens ahead 4-3 with his second home run of the season before a double from Mike Siani ended Petty's outing. He gave up four extra-base hits including three home runs over a five batter span, getting just one out to suffer the loss. Anthony Misiewicz was called on and cleaned up the mess to keep the deficit at 4-3.

The Bats stranded the tying run at third in the top of the eighth, then the Mud Hens got an insurance run off Cam Cotter in the bottom half on a Zavala RBI single to make it 5-3. The Bats couldn't do much in the ninth against Tyler Mattison, who earned the save for Toledo.

Arcia reached base four times in the loss with three hits and a walk. The Bats stranded nine runners on base in the defeat. All of the Bats' last six road losses have been by two or fewer runs.
