Jumbo Shrimp and Redbirds Game Suspended on Tuesday
June 30, 2021 - International League (IL)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MEMPHIS - Unplayable field conditions suspended Tuesday's game between the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and Memphis Redbirds with the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the sixth at AutoZone Park. The suspension comes with the Redbirds batting with the bases loaded and no outs. The game will be resumed Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. ET. Wednesday's regularly scheduled game will then start approximately 30 minutes after game one finishes, and will be a full nine-inning contest.
The Jumbo Shrimp struck first Tuesday in the top of the first inning when, after working an 11-pitch at-bat, Lewin Díaz launched a bomb over the right-field wall. It was Díaz's eighth home run of the year and his first since June 6.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, with two men on and two out, Memphis left fielder Scott Hurst hit a bloop single to right field. The Redbirds' runner at second, Ali Sanchez, was waved around third to try to score on the hit, but Jumbo Shrimp right fielder Brian Miller fired the ball right on the money to catcher Chad Wallach, who was able to apply the tag and end the inning, keeping Jacksonville in front.
Memphis scored the equalizer in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Juan Yepez RBI single that brought in Harrison Bader.
Despite the low score, both teams combined for 19 hits at the time of the suspension. Jacksonville left seven batters on base, with Memphis leaving nine batters on.
Coverage of Wednesday's de facto doubleheader begins at 5:50 p.m. ET on MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 AM, the ESPN 690 AM Facebook page and the MiLB First Pitch app.
