Komets Top East for Seventh Straight Week

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets earned one win in 2 games taking 2 points to continue to lead the Eastern Conference in the UHL for the 7th consecutive week. The Komets hold a 2-point margin over 2nd place Elmira entering the 18th week of the 2002-03 campaign.

Wednesday the Komets dropped a 3-2 decision at Kalamazoo. Bobby Stewart and Michel Massie netted the Fort Wayne goals as goaltender Tom Lawson stopped 21 of 24 shots in his 10th loss of the season. The Komets record against Kalamazoo fell to 2-1-1 on the season.

Friday the Komets ambushed the Generals in Flint 5-1 for their 4th win over the Generals this season in 6 meetings (4-1-1). Adam Lewis, David-Alexandre Beauregard, Troy Neumeier and Stewart (2 goals) each found the net for the Komets. Lawson made 30 saves on 31 shots for his 19th win of the season in his 6th straight start. The game set a new UHL record for penalty minutes in a single game with 337 minutes whistled. The Komets set a new team record of 132 penalty minutes for a UHL game and a new opponent record of 205 penalty minutes. Flint's 205 minutes is also a new UHL record of penalty minutes for a team in a game.

This week the Komets play their 3rd of a 4-game road stand at Quad City Wednesday at 8pm and finish the tour at Muskegon Friday at 7:30pm. The Komets return home to host Kalamazoo Saturday at 7:35pm and Missouri Sunday at 5:05pm.

Streaking Komets.....Colin Chaulk is riding a 6-game point streak (4g, 4a) and a 3-game assist streak (3a).....Bobby Stewart has points in 6 straight games (7g, 6a) and a 4-game goal streak (6g).....Michel Massie has a 5-game point streak (4g, 3a).

Komets of the week: Center Bobby Stewart gets the nomination for UHL Player of the Week scoring 3 goals (1 gwg, 1 ppg) and 1 assist in the 2 games. Tom Lawson gets the nomination for UHL Goaltender of the Week after posting a 2.02 goals against average and making 51 saves on 55 shots for a .927 save percentage on the week.

Komets of the month: Center Bobby Stewart and goalie Tom Lawson also get the Komet nominations for UHL Player and Goaltender of the Month awards for January, 2003. Stewart scored 11 goals and 19 points in 14 games while Lawson backstopped the Komets to 6 wins, 4 losses and 2 shootout losses during the month making 270 saves for a .909 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average.

On the edge of milestones.....Colin Chaulk has 99 career goals.....Troy Neumeier has 97 pro points.

Ironman Schmidt.....defenseman Kevin Schmidt, the only skater to appear in all 74 Komet games last season, has skated all 47 Komet games to date this season. Schmidt has appeared in a total of 121 straight Komet games, shattering the old record of 95 games set by Mike McKay (1/9/01-2/22/02).

January turnaround....the Komets started the first 9 games in January with a 3-4-2 record and then went 4-1-0 in the last 5 games to finish the month at 7-5-2 for a .571 point percentage. It's the 4th straight winning January in the Komet's 4 UHL seasons.

Muhammad Ali visits Komets Saturday for Comcast Report Card Night.....former Boxing Champion of the World Muhammad Ali will make a special appearance this Saturday, Feb. 8 when the Komets host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35pm. Fans are encouraged to be at the game early to see Ali drop the ceremonial first puck prior to the 7:35pm opening faceoff. The Champ will be on hand to spend some quality time with local children facing their own fights against life threatening illnesses and to help recognize all of the "A" students in attendance as part of the Comcast annual Report Card Night at Komet Hockey. Students will be admitted free to Saturday night's game with a report card "A", or "A Equivalent". Students can take their report card, a copy of their report card, or a note signed by their teacher to the Coliseum Ticket Office for a free ticket. Also, a portion of the ticket sales Saturday night will be donated to Camp Watcha-Wanna-Do. A raffle organized by the Bantam AA Komets featuring items autographed by Ali will take place at the game as an additional fundraiser.

Sunday is Marathon Night.....the Komets have teamed with Marathon to offer fans a chance to get gas at Marathon for a free Komet ticket offer. 3 fill-ups stamped on a Marathon/Komet Fill Up card gets customers a "Buy One, Get One Free" ticket offer good on select Marathon nights at Komet home games all season long. The next Marathon Night is this Sunday, Feb. 9, when the Komets host Missouri at 5:05pm. Fill Up cards can be redeemed at the Coliseum Ticket Office.

Get in the Zone.....the Komets and Hagerman Construction, the main contractor for the renovation of the Memorial Coliseum, have set up the "Komet Construction Zone" for the 2002-03 season giving local children's organizations a chance to see Komet hockey. 50 tickets to sit free in the "Construction Zone" will be donated to a local children's organization. In addition to the free tickets, groups will receive official Hagerman construction helmets and more courtesy of Hagerman Construction and the Komets.
