Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review For the Week of February 3rd-February 9th

Record Last Week: 1-2-0 Overall Record 19-23-7

Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice three times last week. Kalamazoo started the week on Wednesday (1/29), as they hosted the Fort Wayne Komets at Wings Stadium. The K-Wings soared out to an early lead, as Charlie Elezi scored his first of the season at the 2:08 mark of the opening period. Kalamazoo would extend their lead to two-nothing midway in the period with a goal from the left point by Eric Lawson (2). Fort Wayne cut the K-Wings lead to 2-1 9:55 into the second period, when Bobby Stewart tallied his teams leading 25th goal of the season. The K-Wings would add the eventual game winning goal just four minutes later when Shawn Roed scored his first as a K-Wing and his 9th overall of the season, on a goal that was assisted by his older brother Peter Roed. The Komets added a goal by Michel Massie early in the third, but it wouldn't be enough as the K-Wings defeated the top team in the Eastern Conference by the final of 3-2.

Kalamazoo's three game run continued at home on Friday (1/31), as they hosted the Port Huron Beacons. The Beacons would score two goals in the first 10 minutes of play and not look back, as they defeated the K-Wings 3-0. Kory Cooper stopped 37 shots to record his third shutout of the year. K-Wings goaltender Chad Alban kept the K-Wings in the game knocking aside 18 shots.

Kalamazoo ended the week on the road as they traveled to Muskegon to battle the Fury on Saturday (2/1). Like the night prior, the K-Wings opposition would jump ahead to a two-nothing lead, as Muskegon received goals from Brant Blackned (27) and Andrew Luciuk (24). The K-Wings cut the Fury lead to 2-1 at the 11:42 mark of the period, when Peter Roed (15) scored on a wrist shot from the left circle. From the Fury exploded for the games next 5 goals including two more from Luciuk giving him a hat trick for the game. With Muskegon up 7-1, the K-Wings added one more goal, as Kurt Miller scored his 9th of the season off the power play late in the third period, but it wouldn't be enough as the K-Wings lost to Muskegon by the final of 7-2

Fast Forward Kalamazoo will hit the ice four times this week. The K-Wings enter the week 3 points behind the Flint Generals for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, and Kalamazoo will have ample opportunity to cut into that lead, as the K-Wings host the Flint Generals on both Wednesday (2/5) and Friday (2/7). The K-Wings are just 0-3-1 against the Generals this season. The games will also be the first opportunities for the Generals to impress their new Head Coach, as former K-Wings Robbie Nichols took over the Head Coaching duties from Kirk Tomlinson earlier today. Nichols coached the Generals for four seasons.

The K-Wings play their lone road game of the week on Saturday (2/08), as they travel to Fort Wayne to battle their long time rivals the Fort Wayne Komets. The K-Wings have won two straight over the Komets and are 2-1-1 on the season against Fort Wayne.

Kalamazoo finishes off the week, as they host the Muskegon Fury. The game marks the third straight week that the K-Wings have battled the Fury. The K-Wings will be looking for their first win at home against the Fury this season, as Kalamazoo is 1-5-2 against the Fury this year.

Vilneff Named Alternate Captain The Kalamazoo Wings have named defenseman Mark Vilneff as it's third alternate captain. Vilneff will join Mark Lawrence and Justin Cardwell in wearing the "A".

Roed Tops Leagues Sharpshooters The top shooter in the UHL wears a K-Wings sweater. K-Wings forward Shawn Roed leads the UHL in shooting percentage with a percentage of 22.5%. The younger of the Roed brother has scored 9 goals on 40 shots this year.

Heading to Battle K-Wings start the week 2 points out of fourth place in the Western Conference and three points out of a playoff spot in the west, however, Kalamazoo will have the opportunity to cut into that total, as they play two games against the Flint Generals this week. The Generals start the week 3 points ahead of the K-Wings for the fourth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Good in the Close Games The K-Wings have found ways this season to win the close games. Kalamazoo is 11-3-7 in games decided by 1 goal.
