Gulls Split Series; Come Home Disappointed

February 3, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - If someone told Steve Martinson Friday morning that his San Diego Gulls were going to take three points in a two-game set at the Bank of America Centre, odds are he would be pretty satisfied. But if he knew the Gulls blew a chance to skate out with four points, well... lets just say he wouldn't be too pleased.

That's exactly what happened in Boise, Idaho last weekend. San Diego couldn't hold on to 2-1 lead Friday and settled for a shootout victory. Saturday, the Blue and Orange blew a three-goal lead and a late two-goal lead and only mustered a shootout point.

So the Gulls (26-13-2) are right back where they started from, 16 points behind Idaho for first place in the West Coast Hockey League. The Bakersfield Condors earned four points last week and are now tied with San Diego for second place. The Blue and Orange do have six games in hand on Idaho and three on Bakersfield.

NOTES: Trevor Koenig is sitting on 99 WCHL career wins. He needs eight more W's for 100 in his Gulls tenure... Koenig is 89 wins behind Sergei Naumov, the WCHL all-time leader... San Diego is 2-7-2 over the last three seasons at the B of A Centre... The Gulls have gained at least one point in 19 of their last 22 games (18-3-1)... When Kevin Grant is in the lineup, San Diego is 14-3...

TRANSACTIONS:

Grant was activated from injured reserve... Dennis Purdie was placed back on the 14-day IR... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera still remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...

RECAP:

GULLS 3 @, Steelheads 2 (SO); Friday, Jan.31: San Diego blew one-goal leads twice, but made their last one stand up, thanks to Koenig. For the second straight game, the all-star netminder was perfect in a shootout and led the Gulls to the one-goal win. Mark Pederson scored both regulation goals for San Diego. Koenig finished with 33 saves.

Gulls 5 @ STEELHEADS 6 (SO); Saturday, Feb. 1: The Gulls were 17 seconds away from sweeping the weekend set, but Scott Burt tied it and his teammates did the rest in the shootout. San Diego had leads of 3-0 and 5-3, but a relentless Idaho squad kept coming back. In the extra frame, the Steelheads beat Koenig three times while the Gulls could only beat Jason Cugnet twice.

THIS WEEK:

San Diego concludes its road trip Tuesday and Wednesday against the Fresno Falcons. Both games at Selland Arena start at 7 p.m. The Gulls return home Friday against the Bakersfield Condors. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
