Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads wrap up a six-game homestand picking up 11 points with five wins and one shootout loss. They beat Long Beach on January 24th by 7-2 and January 25th by 8-4. Next, they squeaked by Bakersfield with a 3-2 win on January 27th and a 4-3 victory on the 29th. Then, the San Diego Gulls came to down for two very exciting games. Both Friday's and Saturday's games went to a shootout, with each team getting a win and three points on the two-game set. The Steelheads are now 33-10-4, 70 points on the season, and 21-1-1 at home.
Top of Their League: The Steelheads lead the league in goals (172), assists (280), and points (452). They also have the best overall power play record scoring 60 goals with 264 opportunities (22.7%). Overall, Idaho has the best penalty kill holding the opposition to just 29 goals in 234 chances (87.6%).
Sizzling Steelhead: The Steelheads have three of the top ten scorers in the league: Marty Flichel (RW) is second with 52 points; Joe Rybar (C) is fourth with 50; and Scott Swanson (D) is sixth with his 48 points. Flichel leads the league in goals scored with 27, and in power play goals with 14. Swanson leads the league in assists with 41 and his 48 points makes him the top scoring defensemen.
Between the Pipes: Jason Cugnet (26-9-1) is third in the league in goals against average with his 2.37and save percentage of .904. He also has more wins than any other goaltender in the league with his 26. Blair Allison returned to action on January 31st having been out with a back injury since December 6th. Allison is now (7-1-3) with an average of 2.03 and a save percentage of .904. Cugnet has 3 shutouts on the season, and Allison has 2.
Of Note: Dampy Brar (LW) has scored a point in each game he has played in since joining the Steelheads. In just 7 games played he has scored 12 points (5 goals and 7 assists.)
In the Community: Several Idaho Steelheads players have been visiting local elementary schools. Last Tuesday Blair Allison, Rory McDade, A.J. Begg and Dan Shermerhorn read to students at Longfellow Elementary. On Thursday, Jeremy Mylymok, Blair Allison, Jason Cugnet, Jonathan Shockey, Marty Flichel and Rory McDade visited Whitney Elementary and read to students and signed autographs...January 31st and February 1st the Idaho Steelheads wore special jerseys to be auctioned off for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ada County. Several thousand dollars were raised, and an announcement of the final amount will be announced later this week...The Steelheads deliver hot meals to homebound citizens every Monday for the Meals on Wheels program.
Up Next: Idaho visits the Long Beach Ice Dogs for two games on Wednesday, February 5th and Friday, February 7th. They travel to Bakersfield to play one game on Saturday, February 8th before returning home for a three-game weekend series against the Anchorage Aces (Friday-Sunday / February 14th-16th.
