Bombers Take Five of Possible Six Points

February 3, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

BOMBERS GO 2-0-1 TO START FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND AS VETERAN LING STARS: Jamie Ling produced five goals, including his fifth career Bombers' hat trick, as well his 500th East Coast Hockey League point on an assist to help his team grab five out of a possible six points against non-divisional foes to kick off a season-long, five game homestand.

Below is a review of this past weekend's Bombers' home "3-in-3":

1/31/03- Mississippi 1 @ BOMBERS 3

Jamie Ling became just the 16th player to record 500th career ECHL points (on a second period assist), then added a short-handed goal as insurance as the Dayton Bombers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Mississippi Sea Wolves. The Bombers improved to 4-0 all-time against Mississippi with the win. After a scoreless opening period, the Bombers grabbed the game's first goal 2:22 into the second when newcomer Yann Joseph intercepted goalie Greg Gardner's clearing attempt and sent the puck into an empty net. Ling then helped set up Tom Nemeth's power play tally with just 19 seconds remaining in the middle frame. Nemeth's initial shot was stopped but, while falling down, he put his own rebound past Gardner to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead. For Ling, whose ECHL career began in 1996-1997 with the Mobile Mysticks, the assist was his 500th point in "The Coast." Nemeth sprung Ling free for a short-handed, breakaway score 5:02 into the third period to give the Bombers a 3-0 lead. Mississippi's Travis Lisabeth spoiled goalie Shane Bendera's shutout bid, however, with 12 seconds remaining on a wrist shot from the face-off circle. Bendera finished with 22 saves in his eighth straight start. The Bombers ended the game 1 for 6 on the power play and killed off all seven Mississippi Sea Wolves' man-advantage chances.

2/1/03- Roanoke 1 @ BOMBERS 5

Jamie Ling scored three goals, including the game-winner, as the Dayton Bombers recorded their second straight home win, a 5-1 triumph over the Roanoke Express in the teams' lone 2002-2003 regular season encounter. Ling, who notched his 500 ECHL point in the Bombers' 3-1 victory over the Mississippi Sea Wolves a day earlier, broke a 1-1 tie with just 22 seconds left in the second period. Defenseman Jason Crain, who finished with two assists, found Ling in the neutral zone right after he exited the penalty box. Ling entered the Roanoke end and blasted a shot past goalie Evan Lindsay. Ling's second goal of the game gave the Bombers a 3-1 edge at 6:26 of the third period. Newcomer Blair Stayzer, playing against the team from which he was traded, took a slap shot on the wing that was kicked out by Lindsay, but the rebound went right to Ling, who slammed the puck into a gaping net. Ling's hat trick goal came on a deflection off a shot by defenseman Mike Vellinga at 7:40 while the Bombers had the man-advantage. Ling now has five career hat tricks with the Bombers, three on home ice against the Roanoke Express. Andrew Ianiero and Fred Slukynsky also had tallies for the Bombers, who outshot the Express 46-26. Goalie Shane Bendera made 25 saves en route to the win.

2/2/03- Trenton 5 @ BOMBERS 4 (SO)

The Bombers rallied from 1-0 and 3-1 deficits to notch a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Northeast Division's Trenton Titans, who had entered the game with four straight wins against first-place teams. The Bombers actually snatched the lead away from Trenton on the strength of three unanswered goals. Chris M. Thompson, who was returning to the lineup after a stint with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, helped the Bombers pull to within one (3-2) at 9:33 of the second by capping off a play in which the Bombers' took advantage of a defensive zone turnover by Trenton's Kam White. The Bombers then took a 4-3 lead on a pair of goals 1:48 apart early in the third. Jamie Ling knotted the score at the 29-second mark on the power play when he converted a "tic-tac-toe," three-way passing play involving Chris M. Thompson and Tom Nemeth. Then Ben Knopp, set up by linemates Jason Deskins and Yann Joseph, fired a left circle slap shot past goalie Brandon Snee at 2:17. Scott Bertoli's slap shot score, the Titans' third power play goal of the game, helped Trenton forge a 4-4 tie that forced the game to go beyond regulation. The Titans outscored the Bombers 2-0 in the shootout. Jason Deskins (1-1), Yann Joseph (0-2), and Chris M. Thompson (1-1) each finished with two points, while goaltender Jayme Platt made 33 saves in his Bombers' debut, including two point blank, overtime stops on Trenton's Jack Baker.

TREVOR ETTINGER ''BOBBLEHEADS'' STILL UP FOR SALE: As a result of an incredible demand from those who may not be able to attend "Trevor Ettinger Bobblehead" Night on March 28, 2003, the Dayton Bombers will be enabling fans to purchase the doll for a limited time only. This special offer for those unable to make it to Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Night expires February 7, 2003 to insure extra "Bobbleheads." The cost for the Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Doll for out-of-town followers or those who have previous commitments is $20, plus $5 shipping and handling (if applicable). Fans can order by contacting the Bombers at (937) 775-4747 or my emailing the team at hockey@daytonbombers.com. If you email the Bombers, please make sure to include your first and last name, address, phone number (with area code), and how many Bobbleheads you would like to order. A Bombers' representative will get back to you with more information. Due to the tremendous interest regarding the Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Doll, the Bombers earlier this month increased the amount to be given away from 1000 to 2000 and rescheduled the event to Fan Appreciation Night at the team's last regular season home game.
