Jacksonville Outlasts Gwinnett With 11-Inning Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Troy Johnston clubbed two home runs as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opened their series with a 7-6 win in 11 innings against the Gwinnett Stripers Tuesday night at Coolray Field.

After tying the game in the bottom of the 10th inning, Jacksonville (66-58) took their second lead in extra innings in the 11th. With Brian Miller starting at second, Santiago Chavez blasted a double off Gwinnett (60-64) reliever Tyler Ferguson (L, 0-3) into the left field corner to score Miller and give the Jumbo Shrimp a 7-6 lead.

Jacksonville drew first blood with a two-run top of the second. Willians Astudillo reached on an error to start the inning and Johnston doubled. In the following at-bat, Erik González walked to load the bases. Miller flew out to right but Astudillo scored the first run of the game and Johnston tagged up for third. Chavez followed with a fly out to center, which was deep enough to score Johnston from third for the Jumbo Shrimp's second run.

The Stripers tied the game in the bottom of the second. With one out, Taylor Motter walked and scored on a two-run home run from Alex Dickerson (10).

The Jumbo Shrimp responded quickly in the top of the third, taking another lead. With one out, Bryan De La Cruz (4) blasted a solo home run to put Jacksonville up 3-2.

Jacksonville added an insurance run in the fourth to take a two-run lead. Johnston (3) led off the inning with a solo home run, his second in Triple-A to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 4-2 lead.

Despite falling behind, Gwinnett kept swinging and stayed in the game. Hernán Perez led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored two batters later on a double from Dickerson to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

The Stripers took their first and only lead in the bottom of the fifth. Rylan Bannon led off with a walk and went to third on a single from Ryan Casteel. Perez singled home Bannon to tie the game at four. During Motter's at-bat Perez stole second and reached third on an error. Motter put Gwinnett in front 5-4 with a sac fly.

The game was even again in the top of the sixth. With one out, Johnston blasted his second home run of the game that tied it up at five.

The game remained scoreless until the 10th. With two outs and De La Cruz starting at second, Johnston walked to put runners at first and second. González reached on an error in the infield and De La Cruz caught Gwinnett napping, scoring from third to put the Jumbo Shrimp in front 6-5.

Gwinnett tied the game in the bottom of the 10th. Ryan Goins started at second and went to third on a groundout from Bannon. A wild pitch in the next at-bat plated Goins as the tying run .

Jacksonville and Gwinnett continue their series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Bryan Hoeing (7-5, 5.44 ERA) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp and the Stripers will counter with LHP Kyle Muller (6-6, 2.98). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.
