
Isotopes pound Round Rock 11-1, close game on Oklahoma

Todd Sears fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle and starting pitcher Ariel Prieto allowed one run in seven innings to lead the surging Albuquerque Isotopes (74-63) to an 11-1 rout of the Round Rock Express (73-64) and into sole possession of second place in the American Southern Division, just a half game behind first-place Oklahoma. Sears homered in the first, doubled in the third, and tripled in the seventh for the âTopes, who have won four straight games and seven of their last eight contests.
More importantly, with the win Albuquerque picked up a full game on the RedHawks, who were defeated 10-7 by New Orleans.
Prieto (9-5) was touched for just six hits, including an RBI single by Raul Chavez in the second inning, and struck out six in a commanding performance. Valerio De Los Santos and Ben Howard each contributed a scoreless inning in relief. Sears, who went 3-for-4 on the night with four RBIs to match a season high, was stranded on the on-deck circle in the eighth when Matt Erickson grounding into an inning-ending double play.
Round Rock starter Brandon Duckworth (8-6) was charged with five runs, four earned, in six innings.
The Isotopes scored five times in the first two innings before blowing the game wide open with six runs in the seventh. Sears started the offensive explosion with a two-run shot that also brought home Josh Wilson, who singled with one out.
Matt Padgett led off the Isotopes second inning with a single and took third on a base hit by Josh Willingham. Larry Barnes followed with a ground ball to Duckworth, who unleashed a wild throw to first base that allowed Padgett to score and enabled Willingham to advance to third and Barnes to take second. Prieto made it 4-0 by slapping a ground ball to the shortstop to score Willingham and move Barnes to third. Eric Reed scored the final run of the inning with a single to center field.
The âTopes sent 10 batters went to the plate in the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Mark Little got things going with a triple to center field and scored on a base hit by Reed. Reed swiped second base before coming home on a single by Wilson and Dillon put runners on first and second for Sears, who came through with a two-run triple that put the âTopes up 8-1 and the rout was on.
The âTopes will continue their final homestand of the regular season with the second game of a four-game series against the Round Rock Express Tuesday night at 6:05. Albuquerque's starting pitcher has not been announced as of late Monday night. The Express will send out lefty Jimmy Anderson (2-0, 0.60). Tuesday night will be College Night at Isotopes Park where all students with a valid college ID will be able to purchase reserve-level tickets for just $5!
