Kinsler, pitching and rain help RedHawks win
August 29, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Ian Kinsler's three-run homer gave Oklahoma a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning and the RedHawks held on to win by that score in a rain-shortened game on Sunday afternoon at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Oklahoma returns home with a 1 1/2-game division lead to begin a eight-game homestand Monday, having gone 6-3 on the trip to Nashville and Omaha.
Oklahoma took three out of five in Omaha, while division rivals Albuquerque and Round Rock were winning four of five from Memphis and Nashville, respectively.
Sunday's game was halted with Omaha batting in the bottom of the eighth, one out and the potential tying run at second base. Approaching thunderstorms and increasing darkness (the lights had not come on at the time of the stoppage in play) prompted the umpires to stop the game. Heavy rain eventually hit and the game was called after a 1:22 delay.
Omaha starter Kyle Snyder retired the first 15 Oklahoma hitters, taking a perfect game bid into the sixth inning with a 2-0 lead. Jason Conti drew a leadoff walk and two outs later Drew Meyer broke up the no hitter with a single to right.
Ian Kinsler then mashed Snyder's first pitch into the bleachers in left for a three-run homer to put Oklahoma in front for good. After a solid spot start by Michael Tejera (4.1 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs) reliever Steven Rowe earned his first Triple-A win with 2.2 scoreless innings.
Jose Veras came in for the eighth, retiring Justin Gemoll but allowing a double to Matt Diaz before play was halted. Veras earned his 22nd save. Snyder (2-3) took the loss.
Oklahoma is 74-61 and 1 1/2 games up on Albuquerque and Round Rock, which both won Sunday. Omaha, 68-68, is three back of Nashville in the American North.
Josh Rupe is due to take on rehabbing righthander Jon Rauch Monday in the series opener against New Orleans starting at 7:05 p.m. CDT. The broadcast can be heard on Super Talk 930 WKY and Sportsjuice.com.
