Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - In a game that featured 25 strikeouts, the Iowa Cubs struck a blow to the Omaha Royals playoff hopes, taking the opener of a four-game series in front of 1,953 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
I-Cubs starter John Koronka (9-10) fired eight impressive innings, striking out nine Royals and giving up just one run on five hits and two walks to get the win. Jermaine Van Buren, named earlier in the day to the 2005 All-PCL Team as the top reliever in the league, added two more strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning to notch his 25th save.
Royals starter Dennis Tankersley (9-8) tied a season high for an Omaha pitcher by whiffing eleven Iowa batters. However, Tankersley also surrendered eleven hits and four runs to take the loss.
Iowa banged out five doubles - all off the bats of right-handed hitters who went the opposite way into right or right-center field. David Kelton collected the Cubs' first two-bagger in the second inning and scored on Micah Hoffpauir's single as Iowa scored first. Nate Frese doubled down the right field line leading off the fifth, igniting a two-run inning. Kelton blasted a leadoff homer in the sixth to account for the Cubs final run.
The Royals only run came on Chris Truby's home run leading off the home half of the seventh. It was Truby's 19th homer of the season and his second hit of the night. He had doubled in the fourth.
Omaha (68-69) fell to 4-6 on this final regular season home stand and dropped three-and-a-half games behind Nashville in the American Conference North. The Sounds scheduled game at Memphis was rained out. The Royals, who have scored just eight runs in their last four games, also saw outfielder Matt Diaz leave the game after two innings and leave the ballpark with bags packed, apparently on his way to the big leagues.
Iowa (63-69) climbed to within six games of Nashville and is not out of the playoff race, despite entering the night in fourth place among the four teams in the division. The Cubs are 8-5 vs. the Royals this season.
Game 2 of the series is Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.: RH Jon Leicester (2-7, 5.38) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (1-10, 7.41). Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
