Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Isotopes starting pitcher Travis Smith and outfielder Mike Colangelo have been named Pacific Coast League Players of the Week for games beginning on August 22nd and continuing through August 28th. Smith becomes the first Isotopes player in team history to win the pitcher's honor, while Colangelo earns the distinction after a hitting tear in which he's belted six homers in six games.
Smith started the week on August 23rd with a dominating performance over Round Rock, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on just three hits through six innings while striking out a season-high 10. On August 28th, the right-hander won his second game in as many starts after another excellent outing in which he allowed the Memphis Redbirds two runs on four hits through seven sterling innings. In the two starts combined, Smith posted an ERA of 2.08.
Meanwhile, Colangelo has racked up a .500 (10x20) batting average in his last six games with seven runs scored, six homers, and 10 RBI. The slugging outfielder has tied a franchise record by belting a homer in four straight games while racking up two hits in each of his last four contests. On August 24 and August 26, Colangelo led the âTopes to victory after belting two home runs in each game.
Colangelo is the fourth Isotope to win the PCL Batter of the Week award this season, joining Mark Little, who claimed the award for the first week of the season, April 7-17, Joe Dillon, who won the honor on May 9-15, and Josh Willingham, who earned the acclaim on June 6-12. With five total players being singled out for the League honor this year, the Isotopes have had more players receive Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors in 2005 than in the two previous seasons of their history combined. Last year, Dillon and Larry Sutton each won Batter of the Week accolades, while in 2003 slugger Robert Stratton won PCL Batter of the Week.
