Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA - Aaron Guiel, who was promoted from the Omaha Royals up to Kansas City last Thursday, has been selected to the 2005 All-PCL Team. The Pacific Coast League today announced the prestigious team, which is selected annually by a vote of the PCL's field managers and media representatives.
Guiel went up to the big-league Royals tied for the PCL lead in home runs with 30, tied for third in RBI with 95, second in the league in extra-base hits (67) and tied for third in runs (94). It was the first promotion to the big leagues this season for Guiel, who had a .276 average in 128 games for Omaha. The 32-year old Canadian piled up 18 outfield assists and made only two errors this season.
In 2005, Guiel became just the fourth Omaha Royal in the club's 37-year history to hit 30 home runs in a season, joining Chris Hatcher (46 in 1998), Kit Pellow (35 in 1999) and Calvin Pickering (35 in 2004). Guiel's 91 homers in his six seasons with Omaha rank third on the club's career chart, trailing only Jed Hansen (99) and Pellow (106). His 95 RBI, which ranks fifth best for a single season, hiked his career total with Omaha to 318. Only Hansen (328) and Pellow (337) have driven in more runs in their playing time with Omaha.
Guiel joins Pickering as the only two Royals to be named to the All-PCL Team in this decade. Prior to Pickering being selected last season, Omaha had not been represented on the post-season All-Star squad since 1999, when catcher Sal Fasano, third baseman Pellow and outfielder Mark Quinn were all chosen.
Also voted to this year's All-PCL team were designated hitter Rick Short of New Orleans and his Zephyrs teammate, left-handed pitcher Matt White. Short and White were also teammates in 2004, playing for Omaha.
