
Portland takes series opener 4-3 over Tucson

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders could not capitalize on a strong pitching performance by RHP Shawn Estes as they lost 4-3 to the Portland Beavers Monday night. Estes went 5 innings, giving up 1 run, earned, on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts in his rehab start. Estes threw 38 strikes in 54 pitches in the outing. The Sidewinders held a 2-1 lead when Estes left the game, holding the lead until the top of the 7th . The Beavers put up 3 runs in the top of the 7th as RHP Mike Koplove and LHP Randy Choate gave up all 3 runs on 1 hit to take a 4-2 lead. 2B Keoni DeRenne hit his second homerun of the season in the bottom of the eighth to pull Tucson within a run but they could not close the gap in the final inning and lost 4-3.
The Sidewinders were led offensively by RF Josh Kroeger and 2B Keoni DeRenne. Kroeger went 2-for-4 with a run. DeRenne went 1-for-4 with a run, home run (2) and an RBI. Estes also tried to help his own cause by hitting an RBI double in his only at bat of the game.
The loss drops the Sidewinders to 65-72 on the season, 4-5 against the Beavers. The Sidewinders and Beavers play game 2 of the 4-game set tomorrow at 7 PM at Tucson Electric Park. The scheduled starting pitchers are RHP Kerry Ligtenberg (3-2, 3.12) for Tucson and LHP Ryan Snare (3-1, 6.64) for Portland.
