Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
AUGUST 29, 2005, 7:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (68-68) vs. Iowa (62-69) HOME: 32-36 (39-33 in â04) AWAY: 36-32 (32-40 in '04) vs. Iowa: 5-7 (8-8 in '04)
TONIGHT: The Royals open the home series of the regular season, with the first of four vs. Iowa. Omaha is 4-5 on the home stand. Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
SUNDAY: After a 1-hour-22 minute rain delay - which came with the Royals trailing 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the 8th and Matt Diaz representing the potential tying run at second base - the game was called due to rain and Oklahoma took the series 3-2. Diaz had belted a double off the left-center field wall in the fading natural light and with no stadium lights on, the umpires ordered the tarp to be rolled out at 3:46 p.m., about 15 minutes before the thunderstorm arrived. Kyle Snyder (2-3), who had a perfect game through five innings and a 2-0 lead, walked the leadoff batter in the 6th. Two outs later, Drew Meyer broke up the no-hitter with a single. One pitch later, Ian Kinsler smacked a game-deciding, three-run homer. Steven Rowe (1-0) fired 2.2 scoreless innings to get the win and, despite allowing Diaz' double, Jose Veras recorded one out as well as his 22nd save.
ROYALS REPORT: The Royals still trail Nashville by 3.0 games in the PCL's American Conference North. The Sounds lost 4-3 last night at Round Rock. Memphis also lost 4-3 last night at Albuquerque, keeping the Redbirds 2.5 games behind Omaha and 5.5 behind the Sounds. Nashville opens a series at Memphis tonight. *** Calvin Pickering, who has 43 RBI in his last 41 games, was left standing on deck when darkness descended in the 8th inning yesterday. "Pick" has hit three homers in his last seven contests. *** Adrian Brown went 2-for-4 yesterday with an RBI double. He had been in a .186 (8-43) funk over his previous ten games. *** In just his third game since joining Omaha on August 21, Tommy Duenas went 2-for-3 yesterday and scored a run. *** Chad Santos is hitting .390 (16-41) over his past eleven games, with a home run and seven runs knocked in. *** Justin Huber is hitting at a .325 clip (13-40) with four homers, six RBI and nine runs scored in his last 13 tilts. *** Diaz has hit in 14 of his last 16 games, batting at a .328 pace (22-67) with three homers and 12 RBI. *** Rudy Gomez went 1-for-3 yesterday and has hit in four of his last five games, going 5-for-16 (.313). *** Andres Blanco, who came out of Saturday night's game prior to the 3rd inning after fouling a ball off his surgically repaired right knee, sat out Sunday's game. His status is day-to-day (we all are brother). *** Justin Gemoll is in a 3-for-23 (.130) slump and has grounded into four double plays over the past six contests. *** Chris Truby is 5-for-his-last-54 (.093), dropping his average 26 points to .239. *** Aaron Guiel was named today to the 2005 All-PCL Team. Guiel was promoted to KC last Thursday and left tied for the PCL lead in home runs (30), tied for 3rd in RBI (95), 2nd in extra-base hits (67) and 3rd in runs (94).
STARTERS: LH John Koronka (8-10, 4.30) vs. RH Dennis Tankersley (9-7, 4.24)
Tankersley makes his 22nd start (31st appearance) of the season. The 26-year old right-hander's last start was last Wednesday vs. Oklahoma, when he took the loss in a 7-2 defeat (6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R-2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR). In his last six starts, Tankersley is 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA. In three starts vs. Iowa, "Tank" is 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA. KC acquired Tankersley from the Padres along with Terrence Long and cash in exchange for Darrell May and Ryan Bukvich last November. In 2004, he appeared in 9 games (6 starts) for San Diego, going 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA. In 19 starts for Portland, he was 7-4 and had a 3.15 ERA, which ranked 2nd in the PCL, trailing only Les Walrond of Omaha (3.06). Tankersley was the Red Sox' 38th round pick in the 1998 draft.
